AT&T bringing De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao to U-verse HD PPV

Regardless of his age or win total, Oscar De La Hoya is a preeminent eminence grise in the sport of boxing. That said, we understand that not everyone will be able to jet off to Las Vegas to see his December 6th matchup with Manny Pacquia, but those with AT&T's U-verse will be treated to The Dream Match in glistening high-def. 'Course, the pricing is apt to make you consider just visiting a bar ($65 for the HD PPV, $55 for the SD PPV), but who knows how inflated that tab could be by the end of the night. Decisions, decisions.

UFC making Blu-ray Disc debut with ULTIMATE COMEBACKS

Ultimate Fighting Championship has been dishing out big tickets in HD for some time now, so it follow logic that the company would make its first foray into the Blu-ray realm soon. Thankfully for fans, soon is today. First Look Studios and UFC are jointly announcing the very first UFC film to be released on the lone high-def physical format (that anyone respects, anyway): ULTIMATE COMEBACKS. The film will contain over two hours of footage, with feature bouts including Pete Sell vs. Scott Smith, Alessio Sakara vs. Drew McFedries, Martin Kampmann vs. Drew McFedries and Renato Sobral vs. Jason Lambert (just to name a few). Heck, you'll even find 5.1-channel Dolby Digital surround sound bundled in as well. Look for this one to hit the streets on November 18th for $24.98 (MSRP), while UFC's THE BEST OF 2008 is on track for a March 2009 release.

Format war gets more warlike

Not since the infamous PS3 crime wave of late 2006 have we seen anything like this. According to a notice posted on the heavily trafficked AVS Forum, the HD DVD and Blu-ray sections are being closed to new posts "for a short time," and the reasoning behind such a severe action may shock you. Apparently, a number of hot-headed posters have not only been dissin' supporters of (insert rival format here), but some have lashed out at other members with "physical threats that have involved police and possible legal action." While it's not exactly clear what pushed these extremists to the edge, there's no denying that the recent price drops on standalone HD DVD players have given the HD community as a whole a lot more to yap about, and we guess some folks just didn't know where to draw the line. The format war just took on a whole new meaning, and it's not one to be proud of.
