AT&T installing utility cabinets in Naperville, giving away U-verse surprise

Silly AT&T -- don't you know by now that installing those cabinets of yours is a dead giveaway that U-verse is coming? According to a report from the Daily Herald, said carrier is installing the first of 135 utility cabinets around the city (which sits about 30 miles west of Chicago; more information on service areas here), and Greg Jones, project manager for the city, is hoping that "increased competition among service providers will benefit residents." That competition he refers to is none other than AT&T's fiber-based U-verse TV / internet / phone service, but it'll take some three years to get those 135 boxes installed. Oh, and don't even pretend that AT&T isn't madly in love with Illinois, it's pretty obvious at this point.

AT&T's U-verse moseys over to Central Arkansas

Just days after AT&T announced that its fiber-based U-verse TV service was available in select parts of Jacksonville and South Bend comes news that it's also ready for Central Arkansas. Consumers in parts of over six local communities -- including Little Rock, North Little Rock, Benton, Cammack Village, Maumelle and Sherwood -- can phone up the provider and order U-verse TV, high-speed internet and digital phone service. Per usual, AT&T has made clear that it'll be expanding in Arkansas "on an ongoing basis," and considering just how dangerously close all of this is to Mississippi, we can't see the Magnolia State holding out much longer.

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: September 6, 2008

Another week, another round of FiOS TV announcements with Washington in the mix. This past week, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo and Redmond voted to approve video franchises for the carrier, as did the villages of New Hempstead, Hempstead and Kenmore, New York. Finally, we're told that select residents of Ashland, Massachusetts can finally place their orders for FiOS TV after hearing that it was coming in June. AT&T's U-verse saunters down to Jacksonville, FL and South Bend, IL

While Verizon announced that its FiOS TV service would soon be making its way into a number of new locales this past week, AT&T took the liberty of giving residents in Jacksonville, Florida and South Bend, Indiana another choice for television programming. For folks in one of the two aforesaid cities that are fed up with Comcast's less-than-consumer-friendly tactics, they can now turn their eyes to AT&T's fiber-based basket of services for TV, high-speed internet and digital phone. If your community isn't covered just yet, keep on calling -- the carrier has asserted that it'll make U-verse available to more parts of both cities on an ongoing basis.

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: August 30, 2008

It has been a pretty quiet week for Verizon on the FiOS TV front, and while a slew of new places were treated to FiOS high-speed internet, just a few locales picked up notices of incoming TV service. Nevertheless, Snohomish County, Washington granted the provider a video franchise, as did the village of Fishkill, New York. Glocester and Smithfield, Rhode Island residents, on the other hand, can place their orders right now should their home be within the service area. AT&T may bring U-verse to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Although you may not have heard much about Bay St. Louis during Hurricane Katrina, it too was ravaged by the storm. As the city continues to pick up the pieces, AT&T has announced that it may be going head-to-head with Mediacom by offering up its U-verse TV service in the area. This isn't the first (nor second) time that we've noticed AT&T ambling for position in Mississippi, though a deal here seems much closer than in other areas. AT&T has already pitched its services to councilmen and it already agreed to pay the city the same rates as Mediacom. Still, the deal isn't quite nailed down just yet -- a number of bigwigs still have to sign off, and there's nothing to say that the two parties will eventually meet on terms. Fingers crossed, though.

Reliance Big TV launches in India, promises HDTV by year-end

Reliance Communication just gave a whole swath of Indians a new way to receive television programming with the launch of Reliance Big TV. The service is built around MPEG-4 technology, which bodes well for it keeping its promise of adding 8 to 10 high-def channels by the end of this year. Currently, the service offers a total of 202 channels -- all in standard-definition -- though we really see a great possibility for HD expansion in this venture. After all, it's the whole "still using MPEG-2" thing that's holding Freeview up in Australia.

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: August 23, 2008

Maybe you haven't noticed, but Verizon has been throwing FiOS TV to Washington cities on a really regular basis. This week, we see Woodway awarding the carrier with a video franchise, while nine more New Jersey cities -- including parts of Salem County, the city of Camden and the city of Paterson -- get the luxury of ordering. Finally, we've got much of Stafford County, Virginia expecting to receive the fiber-based programming service in the future, though Verizon only promises that rollouts will begin "later this summer," with the rest of the place having to wait anywhere between a few months and a few years to get covered. AT&T celebrates one year of U-verse in Sacramento, CA

We'll be frank -- we're getting a little tired of AT&T patting itself on the back each time a U-verse locale reaches its first birthday, but we figured it prudent to point out that said services are now available to over a quarter-million living units in the greater Sacramento area. Since launching in (you've got one guess)... August of last year, the fiber-based programming / internet / digital phone service has expanded to cover select parts of Carmichael, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Gold River, Lincoln, Rancho Cordova, Rocklin, Loomis, El Dorado Hills, Stockton, Modesto, Ceres, Fairfield, Vacaville, Mountain House and Tracy. We appreciate the kind words for yourself, but how's about a little gift for those loyal customers? Say, a few new HD channels?

Ons Net offering up free HD programming in The Netherlands

Ons Net, a FTTH provider in The Netherlands, has just cranked up a new promotion that should be music to the ears of consumers in that area of the world. Starting on September 1st, HDTV programming will be offered up for free with the purchase of its digital television package. Currently, said tier contains 51 channels for €7.50 ($11), and an additional 20 channels can be purchased for €3.95 ($6). Granted, you will need to purchase a set-top-box for €149.95 ($223), but that's a minuscule price to pay for gratis access to Discovery HD, Brava HD and soon-to-come HD versions of Dutch and Belgian public channels, right?

Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: August 16, 2008

For the second week in a row now, we've got quite a few locales getting blanketed (or at least getting set for coverage) by FiOS TV. Verizon has announced that its fiber-based television / high-speed internet services are now available in Covina, West Covina and Sepulveda, California. Furthermore, Washington state is getting even more FiOS TV love by awarding the carrier a video franchise in Woodinville. We wrap this week up with confirmation that said service is finally headed to Newburgh, New York after initially hearing that a deal was in the works last December. CS Link to add HD programming in Czech Republic next year

Heads-up, Czech Republic. Your nation could be seeing high-def programming as early as next year. At least, that's the word from Media Vision head Martin Janku. In a recent interview with Parabola, the bigwig noted that negotiations to get HD services up and running on CS Link were ongoing, and that current estimates pegged the initial launch sometime in 2009. Furthermore, he also suggested that an internet-delivered channel was in the works, and there's also a push to increase the number of (SD, presumably) channels overall. We like the sound of that.

Wichita, Kansas now home to AT&T's U-verse TV

AT&T already has a small TV footprint in Kansas City, and now neighboring Kansas is finally getting some U-verse love. As of this week, Wichita-area residents have one more choice when it comes to programming, as U-verse TV, high-speed internet and digital phone have arrived. As always, there's no telling whether your domicile is within range, so go ahead and cross your fingers while making the call.

Coming off a somewhat busy week last week, it seems that Verizon's worker bees are still out in full force (begrudgingly or otherwise) in order to keep those FiOS TV installations going at a rapid pace. Up first, we're seeing the fiber-based programming service head to even more apartments in Northern Virginia, this time to Archstone Apartments in 14 NoVA communities. Next, we're seeing that yet another locale in Washington state (Brier) has awarded Verizon with a video franchise, while four more Massachusetts towns (Northborough, Stoughton, Stow and Sutton) now have the ability to order FiOS TV. BHN, Time Warner Cable and Blue Ridge Communications join in on Olympics fun

We'd say the flood gates are officially open. Not only are the two major fiber players in America making sure subscribers get their fill of the 2008 Olympics, but a swarm of cable companies are doing the same. Aside from Comcast, Charter, Mediacom and a few others, we've now learned that Blue Ridge Communications will be launching USA HD, CNBC HD, Olympic Basketball HD and Olympic Soccer HD (saywha?) on August 8th. Bright House Networks has revealed plans to light up NBC Universal HD (at least in Michigan), while Time Warner Cable tosses in USA HD and Universal HD for places not already gifted. Gee, thanks guys, you shouldn't have.
