PlayOn media server now serving Wii customers (in beta, anyway)

We knew good and well that the fine folks over at MediaMall were toiling away in an attempt to bring internet TV content from YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, CBS, CNN and a host of other sources to Nintendo's white-hot Wii, but there's just nothing like hearing that intentions have become reality. Based on an email from MediaMall support to a particularly curious user, the "latest version of PlayOn includes a beta version of Wii functionality in it." Naturally, the company's doing its darnedest to keep this under wraps for now, but we're eager to get legions of Wii users testing it out and reporting back with performance evaluations. The note does mention that quality will be lower than on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 due to the inherit hardware limitations on Nintendo's baby, but hey, you knew that going in, right? Hop on past the break for the letter in its entirety, which includes instructions on getting this going on your console.

Engadget HD's recession antidote: win an MyVu Crystal!

MyVu Crystal
This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn't want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back -- so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We'll be handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff or companies stop sending things. Today we've got an MyVu Crystal on offer. Read the rules below (no skimming -- we're omniscient and can tell when you've skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff!

Big thanks to MyVu for providing the gear!

The rules:
  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for "fixing" the world economy, that'd be sweet too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one (1) Lexar Retrax.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.

Engadget HD's recession antidote: win an Moxi HD DVR!

Moxi box and screen shot
This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget HD didn't want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back -- so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. Today we've got an Moxi HD DVR on offer, and just because this is the latest HD DVR with 14-days of guide data doesn't mean it's like winning a puppy. Unlike other DVRs, the Moxi is the gift that keeps on giving because it doesn't require a monthly service to function. Read the rules below (no skimming -- we're omniscient and can tell when you've skimmed) and get commenting! Hooray for free stuff! Sadly only one can win, but for everyone else you might take advantage of one of the interest free payment plans available via Moxi.com, and there is even a 30-day return policy if things don't work out.

Vizio Super Bowl ad kicks off million dollar 55-inch LCD giveaway

Forget the 3D, Vizio's "If your TV doesn't say Vizio...you spent too much" ad (embedded after the break if you haven't seen it yet) probably had viewers nodding knowingly at their V nameplate, being restrained from throwing objects through their (presumably overpriced) display, or wondering where the upstart manufacturer turned premium brand got the stones to call out THEIR high quality HDTV. Whatever your reaction was, you probably like free stuff, and Vizio apparently didn't blow it's whole marketing load on a plain-jane $3 million Super Bowl ad, stashing away another million dollars worth of 50,000:1 contrast ratio 55-inch XVT model LCDs in 28 weekly drawings from now until August 14. Check the website for details (visits are apparently up 400% since the ad, hopefully not too many of those were offended plasma owners), unless you're holding out for the new models.

Reminder: CES schwag bag giveaway!

You just knew we wouldn't let the deadline sneak up on you without a reminder, right? Just in case you missed our original post advertising the Engadget HD CES schwag bag giveaway, here's a hint on what to do now. Head on over, read up on the stipulations and drop your comment while you're there. Oh, and cross your fingers for luck. That's it!

Engadget HD CES schwag giveaway: Blu-ray discs and more

Blu-ray Disc giveaway
Although the announcements at CES weren't particularly wonderful this year, the schwag was pretty sweet. In fact at the Blu-ray Disc Association press event some of the best schwag of the entire show was dispensed -- assuming you like Blu-ray Discs, which we do. You'd expect that if discs were given away, the titles wouldn't be anything to write home about. But in this case, the BDA gave out six movies and a few of them were not only the hottest selling this year, but one of them (The Dark Knight) was the hottest of all time. So we're passing on the goods to our favorite people, which is of course our readers. Up for grabs is four sets of the following movies; The Dark Knight, Batman Begins (Limited Edition Gift Set), WALL-E, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Pineapple Express, and Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who! We're also including a Blu-ray branded bag to tote 'em in and one lucky winner will also receive some additional schwag. If you're interested, leave a comment below and we'll randomly pick four winners for the discs and one of those four will also get a TiVo doll, a Cyberlink wallet and a few other goodies -- see below.

The rules:
  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, though we'd prefer to hear about your favorite CES announcement.
  • Winners will be chosen randomly. Four winners will receive one (1) copy of each of the following movies on Blu-ray; The Dark Knight, Batman Begins (Limited Edition Gift Set), WALL-E, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Pineapple Express, Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who!, and a Blu-ray bag. Approximate value is $239.99. In addition one of those winners will also receive a TiVo doll, REALD 3D glasses, Cyberlink wallet, Samsung notebook and pen, and Rock & Roll beads from The Digital Experience. Approximate value is $5.
  • Entries can be submitted until Monday, January 26th, 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Reminder: VUDU's movie set-top-box giveaway ends tomorrow!

Black Friday Giveaways (part 5): Universal Remote's URC Digital R50

Even if you're pouting away, scouring the intarwebz in hopes of finding even more misery to fuel your appetite for self-loathing, we can think of precisely one thing for you to be thankful for on this day: an Engadget HD giveaway! Death Race Blu-ray features unique BD-Live contest

Bringing the "look-at-me" Web 2.0 feel to the set-top box, Universal's Death Race Blu-ray will include the ability for users to record a play by play video of themselves, and upload it to be judged and win unspecified prizes. On top of that BD-Live powered treat Digital Copy and DTS-HD MA audio should come home as part of the package. Beyond a December 23 release date (same as the DVD) little else is known for sure but in the meantime we'll need to update our Twitter, Myspace & Facebook statuses while taking oddly-angled cellphone pics in the mirror.
