College Basketball Invitational signs up with HDNet

HDNet and CBI logosThe Super Bowl isn't even underway, and our HD gluttony is already warming up for March college basketball. Only a couple of years old, the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) has agreed to bring its 16 team bracket to HDNet in March. Normal folks might think that three basketball tournaments running simultaneously from the second half of March to the beginning of April -- the NCAA, NIT and CBI -- might be too much, but serious fans (or those unfortunate enough to have favorite teams spread across tournaments) know better. For those people, we suggest getting a hold of as many tuners as you can and buying Visine in bulk.

ESPNU HD preps for launch Thursday

After ESPNews, now it's time for ESPNU to make the jump to 720p, as promised last year, on August 28. So far Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS, RCN, Atlantic Broadband and Broadstripe are signed on to distribute the channel, with ESPN "working on" deals with other providers. The debut event is the Vanderbilt vs. Miami (OH) football game at 7:30 p.m., with ESPN's fourth U.S. high definition station expecting to air over 200 HD events in its first year -- Thursday and Saturday live college football games, plus basketball, lacrosse, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling and hockey. Coupled with a 15-year agreement to air SEC matchups on its family of networks, there should be plenty of SPEED on tap for ESPNU HD.

RCN bringing HDTV to student residence in New York City

We told you that kids these days had it made, didn't we? The latest episode of college students getting more than just ample amounts of study time comes courtesy of RCN, which is delivering triple-play services to student residence rooms at 1760 Third Avenue in Manhattan, New York. The agreement with Educational Housing Services will enable the carrier to offer high-speed internet, digital phone and HD programming to over 1,100 students representing "a variety of institutions of higher learning, including LIM (Laboratory Institute of Merchandising)." U-verse in a University of Houston dorm, RCN here -- what's next, FiOS TV in Corvallis?

Colleges throwing in high-def amenities to lure in millennials

College ain't what it used to be, but in far too many instances, the dorm rooms provide an unwanted look at how it was many, many decades ago. In order to lure more students to campus (and prevent too many from parking their keisters in off-site apartments), a number of universities are revamping their housing facilities to cater to millennials. We've already seen the University of Houston hook one of its residence halls up with U-verse, and a recent writeup on the matter reports on the plans of a number of institutions to include HDTVs and other tech-related gear in order to warm the hearts of gadget-loving freshmen. We have to say, our minuscule dorm in the heart of Raleigh barely had room for a 19-inch CRT back in the day, but we may have chose to stick there longer than a single semester had a 42-inch flat-panel greeted us on move-in day.

All live 2008 NCAA Football games on ABC / ESPN networks to air in HD

Not that we're trying to rush the summer away or anything, but August can't get here soon enough. Shortly after hearing that CBS would be producing every single NFL game in high-definition, in flies word that all live 2008 NCAA College Football games shown on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN U will also be available in glorious HD. Granted, there's a shot you won't even have those four networks in HD before the season begins, but at least your local watering hole will. For a look at the current schedule (which is far from complete), check out the goods in the read link. Rest assured, we'll be geared up for the network opener (August 28, 8:00PM on ESPN HD) as NC State shows South Carolina how it's done down at Williams-Brice Stadium.

MountainWest Sports Network comes to DirecTV on August 27th

We already knew the MountainWest Sports Network was destined to land on DirecTV eventually, and while we had heard that September was looking like a good candidate for a launch month, fans of the conference will be delighted to know that it'll be going live on the satcaster this August. Beginning on Wednesday, August 27th -- just in time for the BYU opener against Northern Iowa on August 30th -- The Mtn. will go live on channel 616. Notably, it'll be available on DirecTV CHOICE (and higher packages) for Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Dallas / Fort Worth / San Diego, though customers outside of these regions will be required to subscribe to DirecTV's Sportspack. AT&T's U-verse coming to University of Houston residence hall

Just in case a free iPod touch / iPhone isn't enough to convince you to attend a certain university, how's about dorm-installed U-verse? Hailed as the first planned deployment of AT&T's fiber-based services into student housing on a college campus, the University of Houston has teamed up with the aforementioned carrier in order to bring TV and broadband internet to "every room of a 547,000-square-foot residence hall under construction for graduate and professional students." When complete, The Calhoun Lofts will be home to some 1,000 U-verse connections, and while there's nothing specific said about the availability of HD channels, we can't imagine any upstanding Cougar settling for less.

The MountainWest Sports Network coming to DirecTV

Yeah, the Mountain West Conference probably doesn't get the attention it deserves nationally, but fans of BYU, UNLV, New Mexico, Utah, TCU, Colorado State and the rest can turn their eyes to DirecTV if they're hungry for more. Just recently, the satellite provider agreed to pick up The Mtn. (MountainWest Sports Network) and broadcast it nationally "no later than September 1st" of this year. Channel position and programming package details are still being worked out, but fans can definitely look forward to seeing it switched on before football season hits its stride.

Nebraska Cornhusker baseball seeing lots of HD this season

For fans of Big Red and baseball alike, get ready for quite the baseball season -- from the comfort of your couch. Reportedly, a minimum of eight Cornhusker baseball games will be televised this year, with the vast majority in HD. The team's first TV appearance will be a showing on FSN on March 29th, while five others will be carried across the state on NET-1 and NET-HD (Nebraska Educational Television). Nationally, supporters of the team can catch their April 8th tilt with Iowa on the Big Ten Network, and we wouldn't be surprised to see more games added in the future.

BTN to air 2008 Big Ten Championships

Sure, college football season is still a good ways away, but Big Ten fans can get their minds off of said dilemma by focusing on the 2008 Big Ten Championships on the Big Ten Network. Reportedly, the station will broadcast men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field and wrestling during a six-week span from February 29th through April 5th, and every minute of every event will be aired in high-definition. Things get kicked off at 8:00PM EST on the last day of February when the Women's Swimming and Diving Championships take place from Ohio State's campus -- 'tis a shame you Charter and Comcast folks will (still) be left in the dark, huh?

Big Ten Network lands on Wide Open West

Considering just how zany this past weekend was in the world of college football, it's good to see that even more folks now have access to even more games. Wide Open West, which serves around 400,000 domiciles in the Big Ten's eight-state footprint, announced that it had landed a deal with the Big Ten Network to position the channel "on its expanded basic package." This agreement pushes the network beyond the "the 30 million subscriber mark within a month of its launch," but a number of major players (namely Cox, Charter, Comcast, Time Warner Cable [partly owned by Time Warner, parent company of AOL, which owns Engadget], and Mediacom) have still refused to shake hands on terms.
