Banned Xbox modders get a class-action lawsuit to call their own {Engadget}

Nov 21st 2009 12:25PM How is it "criminally wasting the time of the legal system"? You do realize that there are separate criminal and civil courts right? I'm not saying I agree with every case prosecuted in the civil system, but it's not like someone is losing out on their right to due process because of this lawsuit either.

Nov 21st 2009 12:16PM Apparently a bit more. Finally found an actual source for the effects:
"What actually happens if you have gotten banned?

• You can’t go on Xbox Live
• You can’t install games to the hard disk drive
• Disk based games will no longer play off of the hard drive
• You might not be able to use Windows Media Centre extender
• You cannot get any more game updates"

Though what sticks out to me is that by perm-a-banning a console but not fixing the original f/w, you're just encouraging people to keep pirating games. I know if that had happened to me, there's no way in hell would I shell out for a new console. I mean, once there's no other use for that console, might as well live it up right?

Nov 21st 2009 11:47AM Well in that case you're attempting to scare off legitimate plaintiffs because of that bad. Thanks to the Mafia, we in the US don't take too kindly to defendants attempting to intimidate plaintiffs. That would not end well for Microsoft as long as someone like sinfuljosh was in the class, even if he did violate the ToS.

Nov 21st 2009 11:36AM Making that argument shows you OBVIOUSLY do not have small children... Unless you've got a safe hanging from the ceiling, the kids WILL find a way to terrorize your precious discs. I've been lucky so far that blu and hd-dvd discs have extra anti-child coating and seem to wipe up pretty well, but my 360 discs have had me on my toes a couple of times.

Nov 21st 2009 11:28AM You never had to be connected to Live to copy a disc to the HDD. I never attached my xbox to the network before I got my Live sub through Sam's Club, and I copied several games to the HDD. For my particular console, I got the update through Live, but Ghen's argument is that his box came w/ the functionality out of the box. I do remember media streaming worked out of the box for me back in 2007 too...

AT&T 'hits' back at Verizon's Map for That campaign with an 'ad' of its own {Engadget}

Nov 19th 2009 8:14PM @nfalbo That was pretty much my response to people I asked about their iPhones. I have no problem with people loving their phones, but everyone I talked to hated the call quality. I couldn't grasp the idea of buying a phone that doesn't work as a phone. That'd be like if I had bought my truck primarily because I wanted to open and shut the tailgate, getting to and fro be damned.

Nov 19th 2009 11:10AM @The Dude I've never quite understood why someone would want to let the world know that they have a "juicy" ass anyway. I mean, the only time your ass produces juice is...well...when you're having digestive problems... /sarcasm

AT&T adds Verizon's Island of Misfit Toys holiday ads to lawsuit, demands they be yanked off the air {Engadget}

Nov 13th 2009 4:49AM While normally I'd agree with you, in this case, AT&T is asking that an ad be banned, thus limiting freedom of speech. Do I have Verizon? Yes, I'm fairly happy with their service. Do I think they're awesome? No, as ex-IT and currently a EE, I think all the wireless carriers in this country could do quite a bit better. What do I think the solution is? Instead of curbing freedom (as corporations for some time have been wont to do), AT&T should prove that they're better and out-innovate Verizon. Someone else mentioned AT&T should talk more to their engineers than to their lawyers, and I thoroughly agree. Hell, I might even consider Ma Bell if they could provide a faster, more reliable service than Verizon. As it stands, from anecdotal evidence from friends and co-workers in my area, that wasn't the case when I purchased my own cell service for my family.
