Engadget HD's recession antidote: win an Moxi HD DVR! {Engadget HD}

Jul 9th 2009 8:45AM It won't replace my TiVo but I won't turn it down.

TiVo and Best Buy alliance to yield co-branded DVR, TiVo software on Insignia and Dynex TVs {Engadget HD}

Jul 9th 2009 8:28AM Good for TiVo. As a longtime TiVo customer, anything which sustains TiVo as a company is welcome to me. However, until the cable industry (and TiVo) sorts out the TiVo, cablecard, tuning adapter interface problems brought on by switched digital video (SDV), Best Buy is going to have a huge number of dissatisfied customers. Many, many TiVo customers in areas now served by SDV cable feeds, experience continuous/intermittent problems. True-Two Way is one solution and perhaps the marketing clout of Best Buy may help move it along.

Digital TV transition postponement all but certain {Engadget HD}

Jan 23rd 2009 6:21AM Joe Barton: Don't blame my mother. She's 86 years old. She got her two coupons last year without prompting from the family. She called me to help her get her "boxes" as she called them. I went to Best Buy. When they charged me tax on the government subsidized $80 coupons I bitched loudly. They eventually were caught by the State of Florida and refunded this. I installed her "boxes" and she loves the new digital picture with additional channels.

Seniors and disabled Americans are just as savy as anyone. Categorizing one group or another simply to place blame is lazy thinking and should be challenged.

Sony Reader PRS-500 gets launch date, price {Engadget}

Sep 27th 2006 9:42AM Got a Sony email today announcing this device. Sells for $349.00, free shipping, $50.00 book credit. Checked the Sony online bookstore and books sell for slightly less than what you'd pay at Brick & Mortar (exception: B&Ms discount bestsellers -- Sony doesn't do this, but should). There's a limited selection of books at this time. For example, not all New York Times fiction/non-fiction bestsellers available. Sony mirrors hardback and paperback pricing. If the book is out in paperback, they price slightly less than paperback cover price. They offer some special bundle pricing and this appears to be a good deal. You can currently buy only from Sony Store because of propriety software. I'm a big fan of this technology, having bought the Apple Newton and one other electronic e-book...they're all now history.

I'll wait this time. I'd consider purchasing if it was under $250, I wasn't locked into buying books only from Sony, I could get periodicals, and it had a search function (which I used often on my other devices). It's clearly a niche product. Hope Sony succeeds.

Alan Cox's ThinkPad battery explodes {Engadget}

Sep 25th 2006 11:52AM The aliens have thrown the switch! This year they're exploding our laptop batteries. Next year it'll be the plasma in all those new TVs. Yikes! I'm puttin on my alu-minium hat I've kept in the closet since Scully left.

TiVo Series 3 - A Hands on Look {PVR Wire}

Sep 20th 2006 11:56AM Regarding eSATA port, it has not been implemented yet. I tried hooking up my eSATA drive currently being used on a SA 8300HD Cableco DVR and it is not recognized. I'm told software update in November will activate the eSATA port. eSATA implementation on Cableco DVRs has had mixed results because of drive incompatibility and a range of other problems. Hopefully, TIVO will get it right.

The Engadget Interview: J Allard, Microsoft Corporate Vice President {Engadget}

Sep 15th 2006 8:47AM My NASCAR buddies would say Apple's on lap 300 and kicking everyone's butt. Microsoft's on lap 1...they better have one fast car or be lucky! On the track, anything can happen.

IMAX on Mars {Gadling}

Feb 10th 2006 8:26AM Viewed this spectacular IMAX creation yesterday. If you're loosing faith in our capability to project our most noble talents into space and science see this movie. The innumerable science and engineering disciples made to work perfectly to place our Rovers on Mars will leave you in awe. As the narrators proudly luminate, we shot a basketball from L.A. to New York and placed it through the hoop without touching the rim. Spectacular visuals, science, and engineering on the big screen.
