Is a new TiVo imminent? {Engadget HD}

Nov 17th 2009 8:17PM I know this is going to be taken as heresy, but the current version of the DirecTV brand DVR (HR2x) is really quite good. One of the few that has really had a strong and continuing development effort over the years. My recollection of TiVo's efforts was that there would be some minor upgrade every six months or so, but nothing really changes after you've bought it.

I did like by DirecTV Tivos a lot, but they became obsolete. A DVR is no better than the support team behind it.

Ask Engadget HD: Should the FCC kill DTV for better technology? {Engadget HD}

Nov 16th 2009 12:52PM Move everything to UHF and free up the VHF band. It's crappy for video anyway. Most TV stations stayed with the UHF band after the transition, and the yagi antennas are much smaller. If you can get FM on your MP3, you can get VHF.

As for the business model, I see NO reason why every two-bit crap-artist TV station gets a channel on cable, telco, DirectTV and Dish. Regionalize network broadcast TV, with quality independents doing the local stuff. That NBC station in rural Mississippi can save a bundle rebroadcasting the regional feed with their own ad inserts.

Oh, and nuke the sports-blackout thing while you're at it.

REPORT: Chrysler disbands ENVI group, EV development will continue {Autoblog Green}

Nov 8th 2009 6:54PM Don't worry, Chrysler won't stop making cars until after the 2012 election.

Poll: Did you like the new show V? {Engadget HD}

Nov 4th 2009 6:13PM I hear that some folks are avoiding it because of some "anti-Obama" hype. That's just hype and spin from people who put politics in everything. Ignore it.

If it is anti anything, it's anti-reptilian-alien-scum. Die. Die. Die.

Apple pitching $30 a month TV service for iTunes to the networks? {Engadget}

Nov 2nd 2009 1:47PM +1

Also, if I wanted to buy a show, or a subscription, I'd want it to go to my Roku box. Since I watch TV mostly with the family, I have no interest in something that can only be seen on a PC. Last I looked, Apple's videos only work with the Apple TV box, not Roku. Talk to me when Amazon is offering an open service.

Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player? {Engadget HD}

Oct 26th 2009 1:32PM Wow. That was unexpected. Way to troll for the PS3 vs everyone-else argument!

If you have utterly no interest in games, or if you want your kids the hell away from YOUR Blu-ray player, or if you want to use a single remote, the PS3 isn't attractive.

Starz launching 5 new HD channels next year {Engadget HD}

Oct 21st 2009 12:12PM Here's the thing: how many sources of movie content does one need? Amazon (count the ways!), Netflix, HBO, Showtime, HDNet, Blockbuster, private DVD/BD collections. And of course TV shows, sports and other forms of video.

People talk about downloads vs Blu-ray. Seems like subscription movie channels are killed by download first.

Ford may pass Honda as second best hybrid seller in U.S. {Autoblog Green}

Oct 16th 2009 3:29AM Dave, why should Ford do a "me too" car? They have the only real hybrid SUV (a real 32MPH actual LA city driving) and a better hybrid sedan than anyone. Why make an imitation Prius when you can make the perfectly fine Fusion?

Ford may pass Honda as second best hybrid seller in U.S. {Autoblog Green}

Oct 16th 2009 3:26AM Ford would do better not using that AWFUL puke green color in all the promos. Their black, grey and dark green are much better colors and might not frighten the customers so much.

Poll: What part of your home theater is getting upgraded this holiday season? {Engadget HD}

Oct 11th 2009 9:46PM "something else": Need to find something to upgrade my Popcorn Hour A100 with that is, like, finished and not waiting (still) for updates to make it work as promised.
