TiVo completes hat-trick of profitable quarters, then slips {Engadget HD}

Aug 28th 2008 12:10PM As long as TiVo charges $18/month for each TiVo you have, they have NO HOPE of significant market penetration. Their best expansion was when DirecTV's HD TiVos cost $5/household regardless of how many TIVos you had. They should charge more for the hardware and much much less for the subscription.

As a TiVo shareholder, I find their management exasperating. Seldom dou you find a company with all kinds of better mousetraps and no customers. They couldn't sell mittens to Eskimos.

DISH Network calls first to 100% MPEG-4 {Engadget HD}

Aug 26th 2008 12:01PM So, do all their legacy east-coast boxes support mpeg-4? Or do they broadcast two signals (which would be weird)?

Panasonic intros DMR-BR360V Blu-ray / VHS combo player {Engadget HD}

Aug 25th 2008 12:34PM Any display that will show blu-ray to advantage will display VHS in all its hideosity. It's not even SVHS, worse luck.

Aug 19th 2008 3:43PM Only drawback is the 4 AA batteries. Rechargable would be better.

ABG First Drive: 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid {Autoblog Green}

Aug 18th 2008 5:48PM I recently drove the 2008 Escape 4WD 3.0 on Maui, over the "Road" to Hana. 30 miles of tortuous twisty blind curves, fequently with a 1000 foot drop on one side. One lane. The car behaved EXACTLY as it should -- there was no uncertainty at all.

Just ordered the 2009 Hybrid Limited.

Aug 18th 2008 12:03PM Bluetooth remotes: PS3 and (two years later) nobody else. Hmmm ... maybe it's time to blame Sony for screwing up. Let them do the fix.

Toshiba stubbornly launches the un-Blu-ray, XD-E500 DVD player {Engadget HD}

Aug 18th 2008 11:57AM I have about 1000 DVDs. Yes, new discs are blu-ray, but I am NOT going to replace those 1000 DVDs. What is so hard to understand about getting the best possible image from existing discs? Sure, I could use my Panasonic BD-30 to upconvert, but, oops, it has crappy upconversion. YMMV, but laughing at this idea seems more a format-war echo than a valid critique.
