Ask Engadget HD: Best home theater setup for gaming? {Engadget HD}

Oct 8th 2009 2:53AM @Wes

So these Panasonic TC-P50X1's from 2009 are actually the same stuff they were selling 4 years ago?!

Yeah don't listen to this guy either.

For well under $1000 you can most certainly get a quality HDTV with a 50" screen but 720p resolution. As already noted if you're not sitting 7-8 feet or closer to your 50" screen 1080p makes no difference. A simple calculation for minimum screen size based on resolution is 4 inch for every 1 foot you sit from the screnn for 720p and 5.5 inch for every 1 foot you sit away for 1080p.

Can Ellen replace another American Idol judge too? {TV Squad}

Sep 10th 2009 5:45PM Amen!

At least Fringe is moving to Thursday nights so it won't have a chance to be tainted by the septic waste of an AI lead in. Though, now you must choose between Michael Scott and Walter Bishop..... I need to get a second tuner in my PC ASAP, STAT!

Eight of TV's toughest interrogators {TV Squad}

Aug 26th 2009 11:26AM It wouldn't be fair to put Jack Bauer in with these amateurs. Seriously, No.1 is an Iraqi interrogator on a mysterious island full of civilians and "Others"? Please, that's a vacation or the start to a lazy weekend for Jack Bauer.

There is a reason for the saying "You can lead a horse to water. Jack Bauer can make him drink."

Windows 7 Media Center review {Engadget HD}

Jul 27th 2009 12:54PM Couldn't agree more with the conclusion of this write-up.

VMC and Vista as a whole were so close and yet so far from getting things right. I tried out the TV Pack (Clear QAM support) last year, it was very unstable. I had to reinstall twice, the second time was because I lost connectivity with my 360, no amount of restarting, clearing the DRM info, connecting/disconnecting did any good. At that point Win7 Beta was out and figured it couldn't be worse and if I was gonna test it I'd really give it a go as my media center solution. I threw it on my little Acer x1200 with only 2 GB of ram and have not looked back. For such an underpowered system Win7 and 7MC have been unbelievably stable and functional. Vista was a disappointment and the TV Pack was terrible. Granted it was better than no clear QAM HD, but it was not a great experience. I've had none of these issues since going to 7MC.

Win7 in general has been great but 7MC is a homerun.

May 12th 2009 1:12PM I was absolutely loving this season, until the whole Kim plot came up, AGAIN! WTF! Really? REALLY? How could they soil such a solid season with such an OLD gimmick. Maybe they thought it would play well to long time viewers, a little throw back to seasons gone by but it pissed me off. They had de-personalized the story and even though the fate of the country is in doubt the plot somehow seems more focused and smaller. It was great. Now we're back to Jack having to do whatever it takes to protect his family and balancing that against his duty to his country. Damn it! I'm still on board with the show but that "twist" was very disappointing.

Apr 28th 2009 12:15PM I actually think she told Aaron as part of her plot, he's gonna be her fall guy. Word leaks out? Aaron was the only one I told. Hodges gets knocked off, I would have if I could have but Aaron also knew and he could pull it off.... She might even be part of the bad guy consortium. Either way, you don't cross Aaron Pierce, she's going down in flames if she's tries.

Entelligence: Beware of geeks bearing gifts {Engadget}

Apr 27th 2009 5:36PM I've had an Xbox 360 for 9 months and it has completely changed the way I consume content. Yeah, I still watch my cable TV but I can record it on my Vista (Though now Win7 Beta after my 3rd reinstall of Vista in under a year)Media Center PC and stream to my HDTV, I stream movies/TV from Netflix and I can enjoy other online content via streaming it through my PC to my HDTV via the 360. This column is spot on in its point. I will, for the life of my 360, have a Windows Media Center equipped PC, whether a Mac running Windows, a regular old self build PC or cheap-o from a Big Box store, I feel a Windows PC is essential to my CE lifestyle. It's so easy to use and has increased the value of both the 360 AND my Windows PC. I like that I don't have to have a box sitting on the floor next to my TV or find a shelf under my TV that will accommodate a PC. As long as my Wi-Fi is working I can keep the PC under my desk, where it belongs, and have my 360 with my AV receiver in a nice piece of furniture in the living room. The Media Center Extender interface is so user friendly I don't have to wonder if my wife can work it without getting frustrated either. I can't believe I'm about to say this but....it just works.
