Cable companies losing stranglehold on apartments {Engadget HD}
Jun 1st 2009 5:51AM I live in a 30+ year old apartment complex. Since day one they were serviced by the local county cable company. Sometime around 2001 Comcast bought them. To this day, I've only seen a couple satellite dishes in my entire complex. However, just recently, the entire complex was wired for Verizon FiOS. I mean wired to each individual apartment - they ran a conduit to each apartment's HVAC closet, and installed a board on the closet's wall, I assume for the ONT. I've received two mailings already telling me we should be able to order in the next couple of months. If I weren't moving this Summer, I would be thrilled. What timing! I can only hope FiOS will be available in my new home.
NFL & Comcast reach agreement: NFL Network switches to digital classic by August 1 {Engadget HD}
May 20th 2009 7:19PM Comcast bought my local cable system around 2001. I decided to upgrade from strictly analog to the digital service. NBA TV was on the basic, all-inclusive digital plan then. Soon after, they moved it to the newly created sports tier. I added this sports tier for around $5 per month, so I could keep watching NBA TV. Occasionally, CC would broadcast some of the current studio shows and live games in HD on a completely separate channel, but over time, that has stopped completely.
At this point, the only reason I continue to subscribe to the sports tier is for NFL Network HD. Once that moves off of the sports tier, the only thing that could keep me paying the extra monthly fee would be if they added NBA TV HD.
