Netflix for PlayStation 3 requires a disc, software solution coming late 2010 {Engadget HD}
Oct 27th 2009 5:06AM This reminds me of the first edition Xbox Windows Media Centre extender that needed a dvd in the drive at all times to work....bit of a clunky way for it to work but guess the PS fans will take it however they can get it...
Maybe this plays nicely in to the 360's hands though as an advertising angle...'Netflix made easy...only on the Xbox 360'....
BBC confirms Top Gear is filming this season in HD {Engadget HD}
Sep 23rd 2009 5:45AM This show is unquestionably the very best show on British television and it is about time that it was showcased in HD.
The awesome cars, superb slo-mo camera work, lavish backdrops, screeching audio and always appropriate music (often by Hybrid, my favourite band!) was wasted in SD and finally they are doing it right...I could never understand why not as they have the time and infrastructure to do it (pre-recorded show, space, large studio etc.)
I always had a sneaky suspicion that this was due to the BBC not wanting to lose BBC2 viewers to BBCHD if they simulcast the show on Sunday nights. I wouldn't be surprised to see the regular SD broadcast shown on BBC2 at 8pm (GMT) and the HD broadcast on BBCHD at 9pm. Most of us 'gearheads' would watch both and they would retain their market share...
Either way, roll on the 'cocking about' in HD in November!

Video: VIA's VB8003 Mini-ITX board has dual-HDMI, could rock your HTPC's world {Engadget HD}
Sep 22nd 2009 9:51AM Looks awesome....where do I sign!
Having a single media centre pumping a feed to two screens at once would be pretty sweet. Maybe the new options of hdmi over network could lead to an elaborate home video network run out of a single box, without costing the earth...
One to keep an eye on....
BBC promises Open Championship in HD next year {Engadget HD}
Jul 19th 2009 5:42PM Well said Richard! All weekend we have seen awesome slo-mo shots of the golfers yet it's a waste of time and effort as we can only watch it in SD...roll on 2010!

Jul 15th 2009 10:33AM Natal is coming to the pc now too...might not be a good fit as nobody wants to act out mime in front of their laptop (!) or in a home office but perhpas this might be something that would work well with an HTPC as these are the only pcs likely to be hooked up to a big screen/pj.

Jul 13th 2009 11:59AM Dear Gents,
I appreciate your reading out my e-mail on the podcast and sorry for any confusion caused! I am aware that my uk tv licence covers all my tv screens (!) but what I was alluding to was the fact that I have paid for the content numerous times with the licence fee, cable tv subscription and hardware purchases (Freesat etc.) and surely this merits my ability to download media that I missed, such as the Mission Impossible 2 example I gave...?
It seems unfair that the factor which determines whether we have to pay for content is the delivery method, not the media itself. "Buy MI2 once and it's yours for life!"
Maybe in 'Benaverse' we will pay a single fee which will allow total access and utilisation of the media as we see fit. So if you pay to see the film at the cinema this then entitles you to a free blu-ray, hd download/stream and digital copy with no-DRM!
Can't see Hollywood buying that approach though!
EngadgetHD FTW!

Both look pretty tasty bits of kit to me though!
Engadget HD Podcast 129 - 03.25.2009 {Engadget HD}
Apr 2nd 2009 11:04AM Gents, just to say that your podcasts are excellent and the best listen on the web!
One question/comment I had is if you think that the further integration of Windows Home Server with Windows Media Centre might be a step closer to a merger of the two, perhaps in the next iteration of WHS?
It would be a neat solution to have a WHS box, tucked in a cupboard linked to your cable/satellite/ota feed via WMC compatible tv card doing all your recording etc. and then distributing it around your home network via extenders etc....
Is this a reasonable hope or wishful thinking?!
Best wishes,
Nick
