Poll: How important is surround sound to you? {Engadget HD}

Nov 15th 2009 11:59PM I have always been much more of an audio guy than a video guy. I can tolerate a small TV much more than I can tolerate a cheap audio system. I can't do movies without surround sound. My audio system cost twice what my Plasma TV cost. I do stream Netflix but usually just TV shows or documentaries that sound fine in Pro Logic II.

Poll: Where do you buy your Blu-ray discs now, if you buy them at all? {Engadget HD}

Oct 18th 2009 9:23PM Gotten a few good sale prices at Best Buy recently. If they don't have it or it's too expensive, then I go to Amazon.

Panasonic's DMR-BW970 Blu-ray DVR squirrels away 2TB of your video {Engadget HD}

Jul 28th 2009 12:42AM Um, those have been discontinued for at least a couple of years now. And of the three units I went through and multiple dealings with Sony, they didn't reliably record a whole series. My crappy cable DVR has been much more reliable for a long time now.

LPCM is not always equal to bitstream {Engadget HD}

Jul 11th 2009 4:22PM My biggest problem with sending 5.1 channel LPCM to my receiver is that most players will still send the signal as 5.1 even if the original bitstream audio is only 2-channel. Thus, I can't apply Dolby Pro Logic II or anything similar to get dialogue into the center channel and out of the front L/R. Bitstreaming to the AVR allows for more flexible and more intelligent decoding/processing in my experience.
