Samsung and Uni-Pixel team up for better, cheaper TMOS displays {Engadget}
Oct 20th 2009 12:36AM Brighter means better contrast which is key to high defintion and that 3D look or "pop".
But "...ten times brighter and sixty percent cheaper to manufacture than LCDs " hmmmm where have I heard this before? Oh yeah OLED and still nothing. Don't hold your breath I'd give it at least three years before you see a larger size in the consumer market. Even if it does come it won't be cheap regardless of what they say.
Mysterious HTC Android phone spied, might lean the way of the Dragon {Engadget}
Oct 19th 2009 12:33PM Regardless of the "3G" listed this might very well be for Verizon. First, if you look at the picture of the "mystery" handset in the picture of the CEo from Google, it looks like this one because of the "soft" touch keys above the trackball. Also, Verizon does a lot of "World" phone which are BOTH GSM and CDMA, so the fact that this says 3G is correct and maybe what is being hidden is EV-DO also. I heard a rumor that they were going to do an Android world phone but that hasn't been official. This is all speculation but we'll know soon enough because you know always after a leaked picture it usually becomes official soon after.
Samsung Behold II caught behind glass {Engadget}
Oct 7th 2009 10:10PM If it's another 528MHz processor, which if it the U.S. version of the i7500 Galaxy, then forget it. The 3D cube UI that is over android is very processor intensive and the 528MHz won't handle it very well. Unfortunately, there is probably no 800MHz like the Moment, bummer.
JVC's 32-inch GD-32X1 LCD is 6.4-mm thin, nearly makes OLEDs jealous {Engadget}
Jun 8th 2009 6:29PM "But Samsung's 8.9-mm thick "production-ready" 31-inch OLED TV was just trumped by this 32-inch LCD monitor from JVC measuring just 6.4-mm at its thinnest point"
It maybe slightly thinner but LCD can NEVER "trump" OLED, period!
Poll: Waiting for new display tech, or more of the same? {Engadget HD}
May 9th 2009 1:03PM Well, from what they have said is that the manufacturing costs of OLED are a fraction of what it cost for Plasma or LCD so once they start producing OLED in quantity then yes I could see them being much cheaper....eventually. I think to start though they will be expensive to recoup all the R&D and set-up costs so don't hold your breath for cheap OLED TVs when they first come out, in large sizes that it.
Also, next year? I have my doubts about that but we'll see. Personally on all I've read is that they are probably at least 2-3 years away from a real consumer production line of large (40+) OLED TV's.
These are the future though and it does look good. Once OLED hits the mainstream say goodby to LCD and Plasma, not because they are bad technologies, OLED is just better AND much cheaper to manufacture. That means larger profit margins.
SED could still have a future, probably doesn't {Engadget HD}
Apr 29th 2009 2:14PM "After proclaiming that the world doesn't care about SED,"
I don't know where they got that, the world has been waiting for SED until we were told it was dead, or near death because of technological issues.
We ALL would love to see SED survive and make it to market, they will be head above LCD's and Plasmas in picture quality.
Palm Pre: $138 to build according to iSuppli {Engadget}
Apr 29th 2009 11:37AM Well, these stories just kill me. If they are JUST looking at the cost of ONE (1) phone then fine but that is not indicative of the full cost. Economies or Scale. I don't think they ever talk about this. The TI chip might be $11 dollars but how much does it cost for a million of them? Pennies a piece and that goes along with all the other parts. Also not included is the margin that all the manufacturers make on each part they sell. And that is just for the phone. There is R&D which includes HW/SW builds and first articles and labor hours, all that I'm sure reaches into the tens of millions. All of that is factored into the cost and utimately the selling price of the phone. Trust me, they wouldn't sell anything that wasn't making at least a 5-10% profit margin or maybe more on each phone.
GM's request for Energy Department funds on hold, Volt looks really afraid {Engadget}
Apr 13th 2009 1:21PM From what I understand they are having issues with the battery technology. GM did screw up, they got GREEDY and abandoned the EV-1 to focus on, p/u trucks. I can not believe that will all the smart people at GM and even going through the 1974 gas crunch no one thought to think ahead 10 years. They could have kept the technology growing if they kept the EV-1 but no they got greedy. They make mediocre cars while the top executive rake in hundreds of millions in salaries and bonuses. I can't even fathom that kind of money. Imagine getting a nice fat $40M dollar check as a bonus! What for? Sales have been declining for 10 years and the cars were getting marginally better but still not as good as their rivals.
The Volt will never see the light of day, and if it does not with a GM badge.
Samsung flip-flops, says mainstream OLED TVs still 5 years out {Engadget HD}
Mar 28th 2009 1:09PM That is too bad, but I really think that it's due to LCD sales. With resepcts to production cost, everything that I've read over the years say that OLED production is easier and MUCH cheaper to produce than your trditional LCD TV so I dont' think production costs are really the case. Samsungs new Luxia LCD's are expensive but because they are extrememly thin many will buy them and I think they are banking on it. Also, I'm sure they know when their competitors timelines are for OLED as well.
IF they solve some of the lifespan issues then anyone who comes out with an OLED TV in a good size, 42+ would be selling out of them, that is how good they look.
Samsung begins production on edge-lit LED-backlit HDTV panels {Engadget}
Mar 26th 2009 10:18PM I think they are 22mm thick if I'm not mistaken. Samsung originally came out with the 950 which is an LED but is NOT edge lit.
The new Samsungs use edge lighting which diffuses the light throughout the panel. In some ways it duplicates what you could achieve by just putting a D65k light bulb behind your set. The ultimate result is that it improves black levels and contrast.
The 950 uses a series of local dimming zones that turn on and off as the picture changes. This is a more sophisticated method that generates very dark black levels and incredible contrast. Sony does use edge lit on their XBR8
But seriously I don't know why engaget posted "Samsung begins production..." when these sets are available to the public NOW and have been for weeks. Go to a local BB if you want to see one, they are amazingly thin but the downside is that the inputs, HDMI are on the side and not the back. But the picture is incredible.
