McIntosh sneaks MVP881BR universal BD player into its lineup {Engadget HD}

Aug 20th 2009 10:41PM

Well, the Lexicon BD-30 universal player is literally a rebadged oppo - per audioholics. It has been reported on several av sites, including audioholics, that several non-amp McIntosh pieces are Denons with new faceplates.

Aug 8th 2009 2:32PM The 876/906 are still a major jump up from the HTRC180 and have the higher end Reon video processor. 876/906 are also about to be replaced with a new models that will have different numbering scheme - like 1007, 2007 etc

Aug 7th 2009 4:59PM Actually, the 807 was downgraded to THX Select - Thanks ONKYO! First you water down the amp section from the 805 when you release the 806 and now you downgrade the certification for the new 807 vs the 806. Way to hit your price point!

Aug 7th 2009 4:56PM You wont have any of the lossless codecs if you run the audio either 1) through your TV using toslink/coax (most downgrade it to stereo but some tvs will pass AC3) or 2) to the receiver using toslink/coax.

Aug 7th 2009 4:52PM The forthcoming 807 will probably be THX Ultra certified (like the 805 and 806 were), as opposed to THX Select certified like the HTRC-180.

T. Boone Pickens scouting new home for $2 billion wind farm {Engadget}

Jul 8th 2009 8:23PM Unfortunately, the lesser talked about 2nd part of the Pickens Plan involves all cars running on conpressed natural gas. This of course ignores the fact that there are currently few cars on the road that have the capability, they are expensive and there is currently no infrastructure and filling stations to support widespread adoption of natural gas cars. This is an additional hundreds of billions of dollars of required investment. He has recently changed his tune saying he only wants heavy trucks, not cars, running on compressed natural gas. That eats away at his whole premise of energy independence for the USA.

Harris Poll results indicate little Blu-ray interest, even as HDTV sales go up {Engadget HD}

Jun 20th 2009 12:12AM "And if you want to get down to it, Hollywood doesn’t record most movies in HD quality. Some movies are yes, most aren’t"

Most hollywood features are actually shot on film, which has far, far higher resolution than 1080p HD video. 35mm film is over 37 megapixels and large format file even more so.

Samsung HT-WS1 soundbar review {Engadget HD}

Jun 18th 2009 10:58AM Why even have a receiver and a soundbar when you can just have a soundbar that does both jobs? (although not this soundbar).

Also, when you TOSLINK from tv to soundbar, you can only get dolby digital/dts at best and not any of the lossless audio formats. You are depriving yourself of the best audio available on a blueray/hd-dvd and there is a noticable difference between lossless and lossy audio even if you are using a soundbar in a 3.1 (LCR) format - that is, no simulated surround, which doesn't work well in large rooms anyway without a back wall.
