Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player? {Engadget HD}
Oct 26th 2009 10:33AM SACD and DVD-A may mean nothing to 99% of the population but admit it: to the majority of that 99% Blu-ray Disc doesn't mean much either. High-definition video is not that much less of a niche than high-resolution audio. And for many of those who do want high-def video on their screen an upconverting DVD player can do a good job already.

Pioneer gives its PDX-Z10 SACD player an iPod boost {Engadget HD}
Apr 23rd 2009 8:17PM Same story in Japan, yes, except they buy SACDs in much larger number than Americans and even Europeans. No wonder Japanese brands keep releasing SACD players.
Denon's DVD-A1UD: world's first universal (SACD / DVD-A) Blu-ray player {Engadget}
Jan 4th 2009 2:23PM .wav? Where did you get that idea? That's utter nonsense. .wav is a file extension for an audio file on a disc, not for an audio stream. Perhaps you mean that PS3 converts DSD to PCM when to choose to use HDMI output. That's correct, but it's (up to) 176.4 kHz 24-bit PCM, which is extremely high-resolution, virtually as good as DSD. And if you choose to use the analog output, you don't even get to deal with PCM.
You can verify this info easily at http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html
Denon's DVD-A1UD: world's first universal (SACD / DVD-A) Blu-ray player {Engadget HD}
Dec 22nd 2008 3:37PM The SACD output of PS3 is actually quite good. The analog outputs may not be of the same quality as this Denon (at quite a different price) but very decent, especially when using the bitmapping options, and while conversion to PCM sounds like a bad idea at 176.4 kHz 24-bit you also get *very* decent sound quality, almost on par with DSD.
As for DVD-Audio, technically the truth is probably that every PS3 can read the disc but just will not output the content although that's possibly hackable under Linux. There's a thread about that on the forum you refer to.
Sony turns CDs blue with new Blu-spec CD standard {Engadget HD}
Nov 9th 2008 8:03AM A PS3 will do. It even lets you rip the CD layer of an SACD to the Hard Drive.
Sony turns CDs blue with new Blu-spec CD standard {Engadget HD}
Nov 5th 2008 9:04AM No, it's not a BD, it's a CD. You play it with a an ordinary CD player using an infra-red laser, it's only recorded using a blue laser. See http://www.ps3sacd.com/index.html#_20081105
Sony's high-end SCD-XA5400ES SACD player eyes-on at CEDIA {Engadget}
Sep 6th 2008 2:42PM Sony already did. The device is called PlayStation3. It plays SACD and compared to this player it's cheap and slim, and sexiness is only in the eye of the beholder. I for one like it a lot. The main things $1500 gets you that $499 doesn't is DSD output via HDMI and balanced analog audio outputs. That's quite a price premium.
Will Blu-ray audio discs take off, or flounder aimlessly la DVD-A / SACD? {Engadget HD}
Jul 23rd 2008 7:14AM It will surely not take off the way Audio CD did -- the difference between Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio on the one hand and 'BD Audio' on the other is too small to warrant any expecations. THe mass consumer market did not turn down SACD or DVDA because they demanded 7.1 instead of 5.1, or 196 kHz instead 92.
It need not flounder aimlessly however, because SACD hasn't either. It's found its audiophile niche, where it enjoys a loyal following, catered to by independent record labels with a steady flow of some 60 new titles per month, unabated for the last three, four years.
First Blu-ray record, Divertimenti, released {Engadget}
May 30th 2008 2:53AM Perhaps the BD is for those not on the SACD bandwagon yet?
Whichever way, the overlap is substantial since the main SACD player of millions is PS3. See www.ps3sacd.com
These people can choose just about any of the formats included.
