Engadget HD Podcast 164 - 11.17.2009 {Engadget HD}

Nov 18th 2009 10:08PM I haven't calibrated my TV because I just go on AVS forums and see what people who use the discs come up with for my particular TV model. I'd love to compare my own results from a calibration disc to what others came up with and maybe do an article write up on why you need to do your own calibration instead of using someone's results from the internets.

No matter what I do with my panny plasma though, I'm pretty sure the color green will always be a bit off.

Poll: How important is surround sound to you? {Engadget HD}

Nov 16th 2009 12:10AM I chose "other" because sound is VERY important to me, but I'd prefer a great stereo set-up to an average surround-sound setup. Most digital TV broadcasts, even when encoded in dolby digital, make little use of the surround channels. I just moved into a new house and haven't set up my surround yet so I'm just listening in stereo. You know what? I don't really miss the surround yet while I watch TV or listen to music (blu-ray concerts/cds/). I do miss it for video games but it's not the end of the world.

Awesome stereo > mediocre surround.

Awesome surround > awesome stereo

Stereo = Good enough most the time. Most people with surround setups allow all the speakers and wires to make the room look tacky and ugly. I've had everything from 7.1 to 2.0. Sure I'll get around to wiring up the rest of my speakers (I have B&W 800 series all around). For now, 2.0 is great.

Compressed HD, 480i/p content, and poorly mastered blu-ray and streaming video is MUCH more annoying than not having surround sound.

Ask Engadget HD: Is it (still) a good time to buy a TiVo? {Engadget HD}

Oct 29th 2009 3:18PM It's all about cost here... can you afford to buy a TiVo box WITHOUT adding to existing credit card debt. If you can't say yes, then go ahead and keep renting from the cable company for now.
