Ask Engadget HD: Would an SSD upgrade help my HTPC performance? {Engadget HD}
Oct 16th 2009 12:58PM I've put an OCZ Vertex into a Sony Vaio Laptop w/ Win 7 RC, used for a media center PC.
Although it is life-changingly fast for all other uses of the laptop, it seems to make little difference for Media Center, as the software doesn't appear to act noticeably faster.
But the laptop runs much cooler and quieter, which is nice, but probably less relevant if you use a larger htpc.
Save your money and hot-rod your laptop with this instead - you will get better battery life, and a serious speed increase. As one poster said, it is hands-down the upgrade with the greatest speed impact that I personally have ever experienced, and I won't run a laptop w/o an SSD.
But make sure you get the right SSD - some aren't really any faster, and some are amazing!
NPD: Mac owners are bigger gadget nerds than PC owners {Engadget}
Oct 6th 2009 9:10AM Hmmm...I love my MacBook Pro, but I really love it when I boot into Windows 7. What does that make me? a Gerd? A Neek?
Do those of us who role both ways and like both sides of the fence own even more stuff that needs electrons? I could almost outfit a Best Buy, but that is more of a desperate and futile attempt to fill the yawning void in my life and keep myself from being drawn into a spiraling vortex of misery and despair than anything else.

Sep 15th 2009 12:50PM I have a Wii, PS3, and 360 myself, mostly because I'm wealthy beyond the wildest dreams of avarice and I scoff at you wage slaves. I actually prefer the PC because mine is draped with nubile young slave girls, who blow their rose-scented breath upon the cpu to cool it.
You poor slobs.
74 percent of PS3 owners have watched a Blu-ray, but how many have watched two? {Engadget}
Sep 2nd 2009 10:08AM Easy answer - picture quality, sound quality, and selection. Besides, Netflix streaming and Netflix delivery of Blu-Ray is pretty much the best of both worlds, with one fee. Thank you, PlayOn.

OCZ cranks clock speed, DRAM on Vertex Turbo SSD {Engadget}
Jul 8th 2009 11:52AM Ahhh, but my 13" Macbook Pro running the previous version of the Vertex brings me to my knees! 60 GB for MacOS and 60GB for Win 7 makes me so warm and fuzzy inside. So, so fast, me so so happy.

" have a receiver that decodes hi-res codecs, is bit-streaming THAT much better compared to PCM transcoding?"
No difference except that w/ PCM transcoding, you can get the audio portion of the usually inane and superfluous extra audio content. Many people confuse decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA with digital to analogue conversion and believe incorrectly that the receiver is better at decoding to PCM than the player because they think the receiver has better digital to analogue converters. Your receiver may well have better DA converters, but that has nothing to do with decoding from Dolby or DTS to PCM.
If you send your receiver a PCM signal, it is still doing the Digital to Analogue conversion.
