ATI's 1GB FirePro V7750 GPU pushes serious pixels for pros {Engadget}
Apr 1st 2009 12:32AM Why can't ATI and Nvidia give dimensions for their products!
A middle-school level tech spec writing class would require dimensions as a bare minimum. It's found nowhere in any data sheets for any products.
It's not like this is top secret info. It's useful only for people wondering whether it fits in their case. In my mind it's indicative of the mindset of these companies - they tell you want they want to say, not what you need to know.
The rule for GPU's seems to be "baffle 'em with bullshit if you can't dazzle 'em with your brilliance."
ezGear gets in the Blu-ray game with the BluCobra Blu-ray Disc Player {Engadget}
Jan 2nd 2009 6:53PM The Blu Cobra universal player could give Oppo a run for it's money if you only use HD material over HDMI (eliminating the need for great DAC's and upscaling). SACD support is nothing to sneeze at if the Cobra also includes DVD-Audio. Of course, profile 2.0 is quite necessary as well.
Bottom line...If you don't like gaming but do like SACD/DVD-A then the PS3 holds no appeal. Oppo would probably be worth the extra $100...but if Cobra makes the price difference $200 then I think they'll effectively undercut Oppo.
HP UMPC 2133 specs revealed, street date of April 7th? {Engadget}
Mar 27th 2008 2:10AM Maybe I missed a comment, but how is this HP 2133 better than the eeepc? Costs more, same size screen, bigger, heavier, just as slow, and guaranteed to be loaded with HP crapware. I might hold out for the montevina/penryn based machine at $800-1000 with a P9500 at 2.5 Ghz, 11" LED, Wimax, 11n, and HDMI out.
Better yet, when is Sony going to launch an 11" OLED based ultraportable? Combine that with montevina features and 25W P9500 and we're talking a machine worthy of $2k+. I'm predicting we're not more than 3 months away from the Mac Air/X300 killer that such a machine would be - it's gotta be irresistable for Sony to cap off their win over Toshiba with a win over Apple and Lenovo.
Did you hear the Sony VP complaining about the eeepc bringing the market downscale? OLED on a laptop would change that in a hurry.
How would you change the outcome of the 700MHz auction? {Engadget}
Mar 22nd 2008 2:06AM Open access? It sounds like it's really a tough thing for Verizon, really means competition right? No. Real open access would mean more than 1 license available nationwide. As it is, Verizon will do two things:
1. Create ridiculously priced contracts with 2-3 year minimums.
2. Restrict many broadband type applications via QOS restrictions and network topology. For example, they will throttle any video service not Verizon branded. How? To my knowledge, there is no equipment co-location provision of Open Access. As a result, Verizon simply creates cell site multimedia storage boxes for their content and then puts in a slow pokey backhaul connection. End result? Verizon content - only available on Verizon devices for 'security and copyright reasons' - is far faster than any other content on any other device.
