AT&T's 3G MicroCell does unlimited calling, but it ain't cheap {Engadget}

Sep 21st 2009 12:01AM Was interested when this was initially announced earlier last year b/c 3G sucked at home but over the last couple of months, I went from having 1 bar of edge only to now having 5 full bars of 3G at home. Guess AT&T has added additional towers close by here in SF... speed tests apps show an average of 1.8Mbps with multiple tests.

New York Times calls iPhone the 'Hummer of cellphones' {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Sep 3rd 2009 2:03PM For all of you who complain about AT&T as the exclusive carrier and wishing that Verizon was the carrier of choice --- think about it - before the iPhone was announced, Apple went to VZ and VZ declined since it wasn't willing to give up control of the features/dev of the iPhone. You think the iPhone would have all of its features had it been on VZ? Look at all of the other phones that VZ has - they're all crippled by VZ - this is echo'd by the announcement that VZ made about its own (VZ) app store that will be the only one on its phone. My service on AT&T isn't 100% here in SF - get's dropped going across the bay bridge - but its something I can live with since the user experience on the iphone is kickass as well as the number of quality apps that are available on the iphone... I can live with ok connectivity - it's always been there when I needed it but don't think I would stick with the iphone if its main features were crippled by VZ.

FCC queries AT&T, Apple on Google Voice iPhone app rejection {Engadget}

Jul 31st 2009 9:19PM I'm all for choice and all but is the FCC going to go all big brother on private companies now and manage their app stores? If someone wants to really use GV, go to their mobile web page.... you can easily send SMS and initiate calls from there. I have an iPhone and have the GV app.. not sure what the F' is the big deal. So yeah it has some cool features but 1) you have to give out another number - all of my family & friends have my mobile number which I've had for the past 5 years - don't see me changing that number anytime soon and if I did move to another carrier, I'll just port it like I did when I switched to ATT from T-Mobile. Free domestic LD is compelling but I get that with my mobile plan - and I have over 4K roll-over minutes. Cheap international rates - well that's what skype is for - Had some family live abroad for a year - made free calls to them via skype video call - hearing is good but seeing is great.... before you know it the FCC is going to require Verizon to sell sprint, att, and tmobile service and vice versa.... What the FCC should do is take a look at all the extra sh*t fees/taxes that are associated with your mobile service - I have 3 lines (2 are iphones) on a family plan and I get reamed with about $25 a month on city/fed taxes and misc universal service fees....

PlayOn media server now serving Wii customers (in beta, anyway) {Engadget HD}

Jul 30th 2009 3:32AM Whoops - meant to say had issues with Food Network above & not HGTV...

PlayOn media server now serving Wii customers (in beta, anyway) {Engadget HD}

Jul 30th 2009 3:30AM Saw the post so I fired up my wii and entered in playon.tv through the internet channel.... no dice... went to my home server and hit check for update on playon but it didnt' find any new updates so went to themediamall site and manually downloaded the latest version...... really surpirsed at the quality of the stream on the wii... was expecting much worse - like Orb on the wii which is almost unwatchable.... currently testing an episode of 24 through the hulu channel... quality looksa little better than SD on Dish --- better than the analog channels on Comcast (at least clearer and no snow or fuzz) but the frame rate and playback isn't 100% smooth... maybe 90%.... slight choppiness... not sure if it's from the wii or maybe due to the fact that the wii is on wifi.... definitely not as good as the stream to my PS3s but definitely acceptable... even on a 42 inch tv.

worked:
Hulu
CNN
CBS
HGTV
ESPN
Local Files

issues/errors:
HGTV

I didn't get a chance to go through all of the user created plugins but did have success with Discovery Channel and Food Network - wierd how it worked via the podcast plugin and not the playon channel...

Again, definitely surprised with how good things looked on the Wii (guess I had really low expectations - definitely not as great as the PS3 but holds it own.... )

Kudos to themediamall for adding more value to their software.

Runaway Wienermobile Violates Woman's House {Switched.com}

Jul 20th 2009 2:11PM "the wiener captain accidentally floored it while the massive hot dog was still in reverse, plowing into a local resident's garage." uh... take a look at the picture... the wienermobile didn't back into the garage - it's apparent that it drove forward into the house....(look at the windows of the car)

Hulu begins rolling out ABC shows {Download Squad}

Jul 6th 2009 10:44AM Looks like this is only available on via the hulu.com website... couldn't find full episodes of Grey's on from the hulu desktop app - searching only shows interviews of cast members from other sources.

Hulu still silent on PS3, Windows Mobile blocking - but there's a free solution {Engadget}

Jul 1st 2009 6:46PM Bought playon awhile back to stream hulu and cbs to my ps3.... just installed some of the user created plugins for playon and gotta say, playon is now worth every penny.... HGTV, Food Network are two great notables as well as local pc file playback and podcast plugins.... now just wished that they could integrate in ABC and CW in.

AT&T to go live with TerreStar sat phone services this year {Engadget}

Jun 24th 2009 1:14PM Guess AT&T is living up to their motto of "more bars in more places".

New Total Home DVR, remote scheduling & guide features coming to U-verse {Engadget HD}

Jun 17th 2009 11:43AM Richard,

U-verse does have an interactive app for fantasy football that integrates with your Yahoo account on their U-bar. think they had one too for march madness brackets.
