RED blows away small room of videophiles with 4k RED RAY footage at half the bitrate of MiniDV {Engadget HD}

May 12th 2009 1:48PM It wasn't the exact same footage FWIW - they showed the footage from last year in the Red Ray format and the current years reel was shown in full 4K.. and yes the screen was not a 4K screen it was not as impressive as I thought it would be mostly because the location at the RIO was not geared for the projection! tho it was pretty damn good....

JVC debuts 8K / 4K prototype camcorders, moviemakers drool {Engadget HD}

May 12th 2009 12:56PM Yeah, says 4K on the camera and the PR... they have 8K projectors announced (and shipping?) but 8K digital film?? This soon after NAB without announcing there sounds suspect.

DroboPro: Drobo bigger, better, rack-mounted and faster {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Apr 10th 2009 8:29AM 75% of the editing market with 80MB/s ?? I don't get it... I know that DVCPro HD is low bandwidth, but 75% of the editing requires more than 80MB/s and what about small studios which need to have 2 editors connected to storage, from what I have read the DroboPro only has one port active at a time (Firewire, USB or Ethernet) I understand having direct attached storage is desireable..but the numbers of $3000 per workstation for storage? Vs. a Vtrak or other solution which would even out on 3 or 4 workstations? Doesn't make sense to me..especially when those fancy Fibre Channel cards go like 10x the speed of the DroboPro. Geesh, sounds like you are ready to take DroboPro out on a date, be a little more objective.

Older Slingboxes won't work with SlingPlayer for iPhone {Engadget HD}

Apr 2nd 2009 9:51AM Phew, thanks for saving me from buying this app when it comes out, I don't think I will be buying this or upgrading my Slingbox, looks like it is time to fine tune Orb on my HTPC!

HABEY intros Atom N270-powered mini HTPC, makes it crunch 1080p {Engadget HD}

Mar 11th 2009 1:09PM Or how does it compare with buying a 540s from the Dell Outlet (when you can find them) with blu-ray drive Radeon HD 3450 and Windows Vista Premium for about $400 after 20% coupon. (okay so this is just what I bought a couple of weeks ago and it rocks as an HTPC!) :)

DISH Network sees Q4 profit grow 24%, still sheds over 100,000 subscribers {Engadget HD}

Mar 6th 2009 10:17AM I am with Dish only because the ViP 722 was free and I signed up for the Dish Absolute plan with locals plus I got someone else to sign up for a referral credit... my bill is only $35 / month right now for all locals, Cinemax HD for a penny a year and many HD channels. I wish Comedy Central, FX and BBC America were on it in HD but you know what, I watch my CC shows on Hulu.com with my HTPC and use sling.com to bring in my Dish content on the same screen, so I am set for now, if anything I see myself dropping Dish for Internet TV! :)

VidaBox's RoomClient: SE can get you started with HTPCs, no training wheels needed {Engadget HD}

Mar 5th 2009 9:20AM $2250 for that?

I just picked up a Dell 540s Slim on Dell Outlet and it has Blu-ray, 2.53 Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 640GB HD, HDMI video/audio via ATI 3450, Vista Premium (Media Center), SPDIF, analog output and DVI also available. Sure it is less than a TB of HD storage and I am not sure of the processor/memory specs...but the HTPC I purchased was only $430 with tax and shipping!

You know what, I plugged in the HDMI to my Amp, fired up the computer, turned on the projector and I was watching a Blu-ray movie in 10 minutes (after windows setup and such)... then went on to Hulu and started adding plug-ins to the media center in about another 10 minutes! Build your own or shop around, but $2250 is insane to pay for what this offers.

LG's BD300 gets new firmware update, YouTube access included {Engadget HD}

Feb 13th 2009 2:22PM That is great! I mean, how else do you get Youtube to your TV? I like showing videos on the big screen and I use my Wii to do it, a lot better than getting a bunch of people around my computer upstairs to see the "Jizz in my Pants" video....great for them to add value, especially in the new depression era.
