Ask Engadget HD: Should the FCC kill DTV for better technology? {Engadget HD}
Nov 16th 2009 3:16PM Well, of course the FCC wants to get rid of free OTA because the government can't tax it in its current structure. But image all the new tax revenue if they could force that remaining 10% onto satellite or cable. Either they get to charge a fee in the bill, or if they provide "free" basic to people you know everyone will have to pay some "extended cable" tax like the phone tax during tax returns or something as an excuse for making it free.
This administration tries to make the middle class and below believe they are getting tax cuts, but people still fail to realize that EVERYONE pays taxes like sales tax or the potential cable taxes, regardless of your income level.
YouTube begins streaming 1080p insecurities next week (update: 1080p video!) {Engadget HD}
Nov 13th 2009 1:58PM How are you even supposed to tell it's 1080p anyways? Does all this mean that uploading YouTube vids to HD is 1080p now instead of 720p regardless of the source resolution? And that video they had from yesterday mentioned that they were going back to re-encode all the HD vids to 1080p?
YouTube going 1080p, already? {Engadget HD}

Walmart offering $100 gift card with any BlackBerry purchase (but only next week) {Engadget}
Nov 11th 2009 1:59PM They are also taking a bet that you forget to mail in the rebate or use the gift card before it expires. That's why AT&T was putting three month expiration dates on their rebate cards. I think the newest one I got was six months, which might mean enough people got pissed at them for that somewhat shady practice.

Oct 28th 2009 4:12PM The GPS is updated in real time. You can see upcoming turns. It just doesn't explicitly say turn right, left, etc. If you turn off the annoying voice on GPS anyways, it's not much different except for maybe telling how close the next turn is, but you can still figure it out by looking at the screen.

Oct 28th 2009 11:37AM The govt would like nothing more than to force people onto cable or sat because then they can tax you again in the bill.

Oct 27th 2009 5:23PM And guess who pays the utilities: you and I. It's not like it gets absorbed from their profits.So our electric bill goes up because the public housing two cities over go these installed, and the residents don't care because they don't pay the bill in the first place.

Yes, the money has been set aside...from a funding source that doesn't exist in the first place. I also would like to say that I have set aside 1 million dollars to buy things next year, but just don't look for it in my bank account.

Oct 27th 2009 5:11PM Well, it looks like you just volunteered yourself to go to engineering school and invent the future. I mean, if it's so simple.
