Dear Aunt TUAW: My "private" APIs... aren't {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Nov 26th 2009 3:40PM I guess I don't understand how the linking works in an Objective C app. Wouldn't they just look at the undefined symbols in the executeable+dynamic libraries that application delivers? If they're looking at all symbols in the application, that just seems to be a descent into madness.

Ask Engadget HD: Best region free Blu-ray player solution? {Engadget HD}

Jun 24th 2009 3:01PM I recommend boxee (now with HW accelerated H.264 support), and a copy of SlySoft AnyDVD HD.

Poll: How much would you pay for Hulu on your TV? {Engadget HD}

Jun 3rd 2009 6:32PM I think that any and all algorithmic modifications of media that you obtained legally should be allowed, as long as it doesn't include redistribution to another person.

Transcoding, Ripping, Recording. All that should be considered "fair use".

Breakfast Topic: The ardent Argent {WoW}

May 25th 2009 4:51PM I gave up at having to beat the Argent Champion. It pissed me off so much, I stopped playing WoW for a week. In fact, I'm playing too much again, I think I'll go and try again for another inoculation.

Argent Tournament + Aus/NZ lag == Not fun.

Linksys has no plans to add H.264 support to discontinued Extenders {Engadget HD}

May 20th 2009 4:20PM Why would a firmware update for H.264 even be possible? To do it quickly requires custom silicon - in the form of a GPU, or a 2.8ghz+ core2duo!

So, it was never going to support HD H.264 anyways.

Lawsuit claims MagSafe power cord not so safe {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

May 7th 2009 1:03AM I had this problem in New Zealand. They wouldn't do a forward replacement. In other words, they want you to ship your failed supply off for warranty repair before they'll replace it.

Definition: Forward Replacement - Charging someone for a part, and if the returned item is found faulty, refunding the amount on their credit card.

Even more fun? Then length of time I was told it would take before the replacement was sent back. 1-2 weeks.

Yeah, I am really going to be without my primary machine for 2 weeks because of a failed power brick.

I bought a new one. Unless you can find an Apple Store, Apple support isn't that impressive. About the same as Dell.

Player receives Developer item in the mail, one-shots Ulduar {WoW}

Apr 29th 2009 9:10PM See, I disagree. It's one week of raiding, which isn't going to be that big of a problem (in the grand scheme of things). It leaves them with a sense that they aren't being punished for Bliz's mistake, and would basically be Blizzard saying, "Yep, you caught us, HaHa. No hard feelings."

Otherwise, when they fixed the SpellSteal/Bone Armor interaction in Naxx, they should have banned everyone who used it, and taken back all the gear.

Same problem - exploiting a fault, entirely different outcome.

Player receives Developer item in the mail, one-shots Ulduar {WoW}

Apr 29th 2009 4:15PM Why ban them? It was blizzard's screw-up. Roll back the achievements, let them keep the loot and take back the item.

That's the only fair thing to do.

Consumers don't believe in "green" electronics {Engadget HD}

Apr 4th 2009 1:31PM The problem is that the power savings won't cover the price difference over the life of the panel. If it did, then people would care. It would be like expecting people to buy solar panels which cost more than the power they generated.

Only stupid people would do it.

California considers ban on energy devouring TVs {Engadget HD}

Mar 25th 2009 10:17PM The point is that there are much higher efficiencies to be gained by removing home heating/water heating from the grid. If you get rid of electric water heaters in favour of solar (part. good for California), you'll save substantially more than the $30/yr.

Try 25% for hot water! 50% for heating and cooling!

Who cares about a stupid TV, fix the damn leaky taps and old hot water heaters!
