Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player? {Engadget HD}

Oct 25th 2009 11:46PM This reminds me of what happened to me last year. I have Dish Network Sat. and they let you use unlimited external hard drives, so I have three 750gb drives full of HD content, mainly movies. One of them failed. Tried everything even with Seagate, the content is gone. I did not make a backup because digital rights management will not allow it. This is NOT how I want to own a collection of entertainment, here one day gone the next, thanks I'll take my Blu-rays and DVD's on my shelf that I know are safely there for good anyday over digital files.

Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player? {Engadget HD}

Oct 25th 2009 11:02PM I agree that files are the future, but it's a long ways away. There are so many downloading companies and streaming that it seems ill-gotten to say the public was unsure during a format war of 2 disc formats....now we have dozens of options, but not a single one the quality of Blu-ray. It's going to take a long time for that, our country doesn't even have the bandwidth.

Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player? {Engadget HD}

Oct 25th 2009 4:46PM In my opinion, the best is the PS3, but I also own a Samsung bd-p2550 and that is the only one I know of in a decent price range (though it has been discontinued) that has the Reon HQV processor and I use it for all of my DVD's for upscaling. It also has the benefit of processing the Blu-ray discs with HQV processing, which, and I make this clear IN MY OPINION, makes the blu-ray picture look better than the PS3.

Starz launching 5 new HD channels next year {Engadget HD}

Oct 22nd 2009 12:40PM Ben, I couldn't agree more. If they kept the original aspect ratio (all 2:35:1 Cinemascope wide films are downsized to 16:9) I might be more excited but all these pay channels crop the widescreen films, and I won't watch them. I would feel different if they were in their original aspect ratio. That said, there is still nothing like a good Blu-ray with so much less video compression and lossless audio. I got an ad from DirecTV saying they are showing movies in 1080p that are "the same quality as Blu-ray." What BS, the sound is severely compressed and so is the picture on sat or cable.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray review roundup {Engadget HD}

Oct 22nd 2009 12:34PM I just watched it last night, rented the Blu-ray from Netflix. It's a very loud and fast 2 l/2 hours, and I only felt worn out at the end and not very satisfied with story development. The special effects and quality of the disc is outstanding, but that's not enough for me to buy one. Overall, it was not my cup of tea.

Samsung rolls out Amazon, Blockbuster video store access across HDTVs, HTIBs and Blu-ray players everywhere {Engadget HD}

Oct 17th 2009 7:28PM Yes thanks alot Samsung for skipping the update on the bd-p2500 and 2550 blu-ray players, which were $500.00. They gave us Netflix and Pandora, and didn't give us the YouTube update and now this one is not for us. According to Samsung it is for 2009 models, I purchased my player in January of 2009. They keep touting that will strive to bring new services to their tv's and players, then limit which models. There is no reason the 2550 cannot be updated, it has 1gb memory, BDlive and works fine with streaming. I purchased this player because it was their last model to include the HQV Reon processor.

Wal-Mart cutting back DVD and Blu-ray display area {Engadget HD}

Oct 7th 2009 5:14AM Walmart is only ridding the stores of the center isle displays of sale priced items, which at the current time are the $10.00 Blu-rays and 10 and 5.00 dvd's. But if you look at the stores, they have actually expanded the electronic isles to hold more discs, so they really aren't getting rid of anything except isle clutter. Take a look next time you're there.

Disney releasing 14 classics on Blu-ray over the next 7 years {Engadget HD}

Sep 23rd 2009 1:05PM I am very surprised that Aladdin was not included in these, that is one of their classics. Mulan and Hercules will probably released just not under this banner, and I would sure love to have Pocahontas too!

Samsung Blu-ray players adding YouTube, MKV support (Update: Right now!) {Engadget HD}

Sep 5th 2009 10:48AM JB1-I talked to Samsung twice and in the second call, they said it wasn't being added at this update but they are "strongly considering" the 1500/2500 series. So don't give up yet. Please call Samsung customer service or go to their live chat under support on their website and ask the tech rep to pass along to the management that you want the 2500 updated. I went about it in a friendly way and he was more than happy to pass it to his supervisor who would send it along the right channels. He agreed that the 1500/2500/2550 should be included and said he would help by requesting it for himself as well (he sdaid he owns the 2550).
