It's been a long wait for PS3 users, who had to look on in envy as their Xbox 360 counterparts kicked back and started streaming Netflix as of July last year. Well, the wait is finally over, as PS3 instant streaming discs are being sent out to Netflix users (
who've requested them) as we speak. Looks like our friend Jonathan here has a Friday delivery in store for him, while the lazier ones among us hunker down for an XMB software update late next year to let us stream Netflix to the PS3 disc-free, in keeping with the natural order of things.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

So can someone answer this question for me.... Pretend my friend "John" has Netflix, but I do not. What if he were to order a Netflix disc, and give it to me. Could I use the Netflix disc on my PS3?
Brian @ Nov 5th 2009 7:16PM
The discs should all be exactly the same. You'll verify with your Netflix account. So any disc should work.
Brian @ Nov 5th 2009 7:19PM
Also, if the question is "can I use the Netflix disc without a Netflix account" the answer is no. You could possibly use your friends account. Netflix lets you use the same number of devices as DVD slots (so 1 DVD = 1 device, 3 = 3 devices).
Nick @ Nov 5th 2009 7:24PM
That's what I was asking.... I don't have a Netflix acct, but would it be possible to just have my friend order a disc, and give it to me, and then I can watch Netflix on my PS3? He has the package where he can have 3 discs out at a time, if that matters....
JBDragon @ Nov 5th 2009 9:45PM
If you want to watch Netflix on your PS3, you NEED the disc each and every time. There's nothing your installing on the PS3 to make it work where you can then give the disc to your friend to use later. Not until SONY builds it directly into the Interface like the XBox 360 which won't happen until next year!!!
Nick @ Nov 5th 2009 10:08PM
Dragon, that's not what I was asking. My friend will never get a PS3 or Xbox. What I was asking is if he were to order the disc, GIVE IT TO ME TO KEEP, could I just enter his Netflix acct info on my PS3, and then I could watch Netflix forever?
NorthCranky @ Nov 5th 2009 10:56PM
Its been answered. Its a yes.
However, I'm not up on the latest features for devices so if you can select what you want to watch from the PS3 itself don't know but you will be able to instant watch from whatever account that's enabled.
nrb @ Nov 5th 2009 11:40PM
I suspect it will work if you sign in with his account.
I would discourage you from doing that, as I'm willing to pay for my Netflix account. You should too. I subsidize enough cheapskates. I'd rather not add you to the list.

The disk is just a client to the service. There is nothing to stop you having 1, 2, 10 or 500 clients to the service running on every platform imaginable. The snag is you need to log in to use it, and I bet Netflix watches out for multiple IP addresses and concurrent streaming happening on the same account. It may even throw the first machine off when the second comes on. Therefore, sharing accounts is risky business.

i love pushing buttons to watch netflix
NorthCranky @ Nov 5th 2009 10:58PM
Hit that big red button that says eject. Thanks.
ScuubyT @ Nov 6th 2009 12:42AM
Been doing this sans disc for over a year..."Play On" baby.
Mark @ Nov 6th 2009 7:37AM
And when Netflix exits its exclusivity deal with Microsoft, you can bet you will be able to do it on the ps3 too. This solution is clearly a contractual workaround to get something on the PS3, even if its by utilising profile 2.0 functionality to do it.
RJL_AUSTX @ Nov 6th 2009 8:37AM
The relevant question here is does this solution access the disc to start, or does it need to keep the optical drive spinning during playback?
ferley @ Nov 6th 2009 8:46AM
Netflix only allows you to stream to 6 different items. So if he gets you a disk it would probably work if you sign in as him. But I would get a job and pay for Netflix like the rest of us.
mkygod @ Nov 6th 2009 10:35AM
Okay, there is a LOT of false information in these comments. Here's what I know as a first hand Netflix user:
Ive streaming it at home, at work, and gave it out to a couple friends as well. I have a 1 disc plan, which allows for 5 devices to be registered, but only 2 can be streaming at a time. The higher the disc plan, the more you can stream at a time.
There is no risk involved in allowing friends to use streaming as long as you trust them. The only thing you need to worry about is allowing too many friends to use it at once which can become an inconvenience. If all the stream slots are filled, you will simply get a message saying that you can't watch it. It won't kick the other watcher off or anything.
If you have too many devices registered, it will tell you that you need to deactivate one of the devices before you can activate the current device. Sometimes your friends may register multiple devices and may deactivate one of yours in the process which can be annoying. You just gotta trust who you let use it. Basically you just need to keep tabs on 1) how many people are using it and 2) how many devices in total are going to be used.
Another thing is be sure to ask your buddy not to rate any movies because that screws up your custom ratings and recommendations. and of course (if using on it on a computer) you gotta tell them not to mess with your account settings (such as the page that changes your disc plans)

It's amazing the lengths to which people go to game the system.
I'd say, "Buddy, get a Neflix account."
Big Wizz @ Nov 6th 2009 12:30PM
@NP,
thank you! 1-disc a month, unlimited is only $9/mth. Even adding blu-ray to that bumps it up to $11/mth.
Just don't buy GH5 or DJ Hero and you're set for most of the year.
Roger @ Nov 6th 2009 1:47PM
If you use someone else's disc to stream (instead of obtaining your own) you are a sad and pathetic person.
mkygod @ Nov 6th 2009 2:07PM
Sharing a netflix account for streaming isn't against any netflix policies. They don't tell you that you can only use it within the household. You can use it anywhere (within the 50 states) on any netflix ready device. Why wouldn't you want to share it with friends/family if you have multiple stream slots available?
Joe Keller @ Nov 9th 2009 8:55PM
OKay. Finally fired up the Netflix PS3 disc after receiving it over the weekend.
Initial impression: DVD video quality.
Specs:
Video: VBR of 1-5Mb/s
Audio: Dolby Digital 128kb/s
No real chapters, just search at one of 3 speeds, back and forth.
Required delay after searching for buffering.
