Ask Engadget HD: Where can I find Blu-ray movies for cheap on Black Friday and beyond?

"Instead of camping out for a big ticket purchase on black Friday, I already grabbed a new flat screen and Blu-ray player, but so far I only have a couple of movies to watch on it. I really want to upgrade my library with plenty of reference quality selections, and I figure holiday seasons will be a great time to do it. Any advice on where to look for the deepest discounts / bundles over the next couple of months?"
So, we know there's more than a few of you always on the lookout for a BOGO or better offer to come along whether buying for yourself or as gifts, any tips for our tightfisted friend here?

Best buy has a bunch of BD's at $9.99 to $12.99 (BOONDOCK SAINTS!) that may interest some folks.
Otherwise, just look around if you want to save. I have recently started buying BD's again, but not as much as I used to with DVD's... mostly animated films the kids love. So I Amazon most of my purchases these days.

At this time of year, I am checking out bfads.net or blackfriday.com for all the black friday ads.
I think K-mart (of all places) has some Blu-ray movies listed for $8.99. The more major stores should have their ads up in the next couple of weeks.

I try to buy used Blu-ray movies whenever I can, usually from Blockbuster. Cheaper than retail and I don't have to worry about a tiny scratch ruining the disc, since the Blu-ray standard requires all discs to have hard coating.

Blu-ray.com has a hot deals forum. Set that as the home page on your browser and watch the funds in your bank account disappear! The latest and greatest deals are posted there and are continually updated. Like Ben and Steve I try to never spend more than $15 on a Blu-ray disc and I have a massive library of Blu-rays. Enjoy!

Best Buy just had a great 30% off all Blu-ray sale. I usually go amazon.com, but more and more you can catch 'em on sale at reasonable prices at Best Buy.

If youre willing to buy used, GoHastings.com has a B2G1 sale on used Blu-rays every so often.

I agree with Isaac, buy used. As an example Amazon.com has the Planet Earth collection for $27.50 + $3 shipping.

Sam's Club had some good Blu-ray deals last Black Friday. I picked up A Clockwork Orange and Transformers for $6 or $7 each if I remember correctly.

If you dont mind waiting and a little work you can always get extremely good deals from Amazon. Here is how I go about purchasing discs.
1. Add every single blu ray you are interested in in your cart. (I mean everyone)
2. Next, transfer all these discs to saved items/to buy later.
3. Check back everyday. Once you enter the Amazon website click on your cart. You will now be prompted with price changes to every disc in your saved items list since your last visit to Amazon. (This makes life much easier than having to look up every disc you are interested in separately).
Here are some examples of my Amazon purchases over the last month:
30 Days of Night $14.99/Halloween (Reboot) $13.49/Carrie $9.99/Hellraiser $9.99
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original) $11.99/28 Days Later $11.99
Obviously waiting is the only way to get these deals because we all know how Amazon prices fluctuate even on a daily basis, but it feels good when you can scarf up a good deal.

The wife and I almost exclusively buy Blu-ray movies from Amazon. It is a very unusual condition in which we pay more than $20 for a movie, and that unusual occasion is also met with movies being released on regular DVD for the same price (absurd).

I noticed in Fry's Electronics ad today that UP in SD is $16.99 and HD for $19.99. At least that is a more reasonable increase for the 4 disc HD set.

And don't forget that BestBuy Match Price, I always check walmart.com, target.com and frys.com before buying something at BestBuy since i have the Rewards card :)

Check out Amazon.com right now they have buy two save $20, buy six save $50 and buy 10 save $100. I just bought ten for a total of $49.90 that's $4.99 per BD, hard to beat that price. I think the sale runs to the Nov. 20th.
jedifonger @ Nov 5th 2009 5:03PM
amazon, by far the best.

I had the same problem you had. So what I did was enter in the phrase "blu-ray" into dealnews.com and techdealdigger.com. The send me alerts at least every third day about blu-ray "sales" - usually 11.99 or under. Another great place to watch on a consistant basis is Amazon.com. Usually there are some really good ones that will drop under $10 for a day.
