Toshiba's BDX2000 Blu-ray deck hits Best Buy for $199, sour grapes also on sale
Man, poor Toshiba. The company's already sucked up its pride and started putting Blu-ray drives in its laptops, but here's its first stab at a proper standalone player, the BDX2000, on Best Buy shelves a bit early for $199 -- or $50 less than its announced price. Sure, that makes sense given the falling prices of Blu-ray decks as the holidays approach, but even at that price it's not super competitive with the slew of other decks out there that can do Netflix streaming. We'll see if Tosh's next efforts are a little more interesting than this, or if this is just more heartbreak than its worth.

So how is MFM going to deny this one? I'm not a troll, but I can't resist busting chops this one time.
I believe when Toshiba made the announcement after months of MFM claiming the rumors were not true, something along the lines of "I'll believe it when it's on the shelves" was said...
Ahem...

Enjoy, HD-DVD fanboys. Yes, it is over.

People are making too big of a deal over this. Did Sony not make VCRs when betamax lost?

I don't see sour grapes here.
WebDev511 @ Oct 27th 2009 1:00AM
Engadget HD content has been a bit thin of late, so my guess is that the "sour grapes" line is just bait for the few remaining people that haven't fully come to terms with the passing of HD DVD over 18 months ago.
Move along folks, nothing to see here.

I just don't understand some people here..
So first, everybody gets foam on their mouth as soon as you mention streaming and all that stuff..and now a player is immediately dismissed when it doesn't have it?
$199 is a solid price for a full BD-Live 2.0 player from reputable brand.
Instead of spitting on this player people should maybe first review and see what the quality is like and how it works. It's quite possible that it's going to be the cheapest higher quality brand name BD-Live player on the market and the quality of video/audio might just surprise us.

The LG BD370 at the same price seems like a better deal since it supports DNLA and mkvs.

Do they put the XDE upscaling engine in it?

Toshiba: We will never go with Blu-ray...
Ok, whatever ¬¬'
3dpenguin @ Oct 27th 2009 2:32PM
Misquote, when they dropped HD DVD they said they had no plans on producing Blu-ray at that time.
Holden_C @ Oct 27th 2009 3:35AM
No streaming on Sony players too.
And Toshiba BDX2000 plays Divx and wma files....
Wait and see
Gamethyme @ Oct 27th 2009 12:39PM
The cover of the box has the "Windows Media" logo - is this a Media Center Extender? Or is that just a reference to the ability to play .wma files?

Its called smart business, Toshiba isnt stupid, HD DVD failed big deal time to move on, I still have my HD DVD player and use my PS3 for Blu Ray, maybe i'll get one of these for the bedroom. Toshiba is still a solid company.

I just bought one of these players today. I've been slowly collecting blu rays when I find them cheaply and waiting for Toshiba to release a player. I don't have a high def tv...yet, soon, but not yet, but even on a standard tv this player looks great.
I've watched two movies on it already, load times seem ok, it appears it depends more on the disc itself rather than the player. Some load real fast and others take longer.
The only disappointment I have is I was hoping they would bring back the function of DVDs where if you hit stop once you can hit play and resume where you left off. To my knowledge no blu ray player does this. Disappointing.
Blu-Ray Player Reviews @ Oct 28th 2009 12:18AM
Thanks for the post ! It is a great awesome player, though the prices of the Blu-ray discs are higher than that of DVDs. But, they are growing popular among the buyers due to the picture and sound quality. But the blu-ray player r with nice video quality and the interface is clean.I'd definitely recommend this player. The picture is gorgeous, especially when paired with a new 1080p, 120Hz LCD HDTV.
