Hitachi exhibits 10-inch glasses-free 3D display
Hitachi's face-recognizing, power-saving plasma may have been the outfit's show-stopper at CEATEC, but this little bugger here showed some pretty fantastic potential as well. The 10-inch 3D display, more formally known as the Full Parallax 3D TV, one-upped most every other 3D display at the show thanks to its ability to showcase dimensions sans any glasses. Unfortunately, the native resolution is just 640 x 480, and yes, it really is just 10-inches in size. In due time, the outfit hopes to scale up to screen sizes that may actually be appealing to end users by utilizing multiple projectors (each of which with a 800 x 600 resolution), though a 4K x 2K 3D display (of the glasses-free variety) is still probably a couple of trade shows out. At least.[Via 3D-Display-Info]

Who cares? I guess there are a few households that would, but I don't know any.
BarkingGhost @ Oct 17th 2009 9:09AM
Exactly what good is a 10" 3D display gonna do someone?
John B @ Oct 17th 2009 11:29AM
Wow. First, people criticize the need to wear the glasses, now they're criticizing the screen size.
Xyzzy @ Oct 17th 2009 11:55AM
Geez guys, it's called a Proof of Concept. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Michael @ Oct 17th 2009 12:57PM
I think this has already been stated by a commenter on a previous engadgethd podcast but any 3d tv that does not require glasses is going to look like crap.
John B @ Oct 17th 2009 6:57PM
I just can't get over the fact that people bitch about having to wear glasses to view 3D. If they're wireless glasses and they're lightweight, after a few moments you won't even notice that they're on. Just like wearing a hat -- when it's on for a while you forget that it's there.
And then they complain about what they look like with them on. Why the hell is that even an issue in your own home?!
squiggleslash @ Oct 17th 2009 7:57PM
John - yes, I'm quite sure if someone invents the perfect set of glasses, there'll be no reason to bitch about them.
But, to the best of my knowledge, nobody has invented a set of glasses that's comfortable, impossible to lose, and that doesn't impair peripheral vision (and, to be honest, the glasses I have worn have also required I hold my head at a particular angle to watch the TV, or else adjust the glasses with each move of the head.)
So until these mythical perfect glasses are invented, we're going to continue to bitch about wearing them in order to see something remotely viewable because some idiot film maker sees gimmicks as necessary to get around their lack of talent. (And yeah James Cameron, I have to assume you've run out of talent given you're resorting to these things. What happened to you man, what happened?)
John B @ Oct 17th 2009 8:44PM
WTF? Peripheral vision?! You're SUPPOSED to look straight ahead at the SCREEN! That's it! Unless your face it about six inches away from the screen, what possible purpose can you have for peripheral vision when you're supposed to be watching a movie on the screen right in front of you?
Are you anti-glasses people so desperate to hate these glasses that you'll come up with ridiculous "problems" like that?
Rocko @ Oct 18th 2009 5:42PM
my problem is that I wear glasses, and these 3D specs don't fit so well over glasses, so I either sacrifice good vision or the 3D experience. Once someone makes a pair of 3D glasses that will fit comfortably over my glasses (or hell, even 3D clip-ons), then I'll adopt this new hollywood gimmick. Until then, I'll be watching these movies in glorious unmuted colors.
Mark @ Oct 19th 2009 7:06AM
John B, people bitch about wearing glasses because they are inconvenient, uncomfortable, may induce headaches or eyestrain, cost money and make people look like dorks. You may be able to persuade someone to wear glasses for the novelty of watching an occasional 3D movie. You will never persuade people to wear glasses as the norm.
John B @ Oct 21st 2009 1:32AM
Oh, my GOD!! I am **SO** fed up with people bitching about looking like dorks! WTF are you doing looking at each other anyway, and why the HELL do you care what you look likein the privacy of your own home!
Get a freaking grip and knock it off with the damned ego!

Come on people, it's only to show that the technology is on track. I'm sure no one is going to buy this, unless it's for the back of some high rollers' head rest.

Bb ftw
freighttrain2126 @ Oct 17th 2009 7:13PM
Now where getting somewhere 3d. Hopefully in a couple year we can get this up to 50"+, HD, and viewable from all angles then you can sign me up, but for once I am kinda excited thinking about where this technology could go.
Casey @ Oct 18th 2009 2:05PM
3D Contact Lenses? I got nothin'.
mugatu @ Oct 18th 2009 3:32PM
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. I've been fighting 3D the entire way because I thought it was like 7.1 or 9.1 surround sound, but if you're actually going to give me 3D without glasses then great. I like the 3D sound I get out of 5.1 and I have that now so good for you and me. It better not degrade my HD.
Michael @ Oct 18th 2009 7:11PM
I want glasses designed for people who see primarily out of one eye. I have problems withm my left eye and the majority of the time I use my right eye to see, however I am not blind in my left eye anymore, so if I closed my right eye I can still see but not well enough to read text even if it is in a book. Because of my imbalance 3d does not consistently work for me, I am able to see 3d but every so often my eyes will get tired and I'll have to refocus, I feel its kindof like that picture where you have to try to see a cow's face.
