New Western Digital WD TV Live media player hits Best Buy
We'd been hearing that Western Digital was about to update its WD TV set-top media player lineup, and it looks like that leaked WD TV-2 has turned into the WD TV Live on the way to Best Buy. Nothing here too out of the ordinary -- wide codec support, Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, HDMI out, and an Ethernet jack for DLNA streaming and accessing YouTube, Flickr, and Pandora make this one a solid buy at $119 if you need it, but it's not going to blow up the world, you know? We're still saving up for monster Windows 7 / CableCARD Media Center rig.

This couldn't come at a more perfect time for me. I was considering ordering a Popcorn Hour A-110, but didn't want to wait for it to ship through their pre-order system. I'll be picking one of these WD TV Live's today to see how it stacks up.

Can you test HD audio, bitstream or decode to LPCM?
NodNarb012 @ Oct 12th 2009 12:31PM
I was planning to use this for mainly SD content; I'm connecting it to a spare flat-panel computer monitor that I have mounted in front of my treadmill so I can watch DVD-ripped TV shows while I run. I'll try to test out some HD audio stuff on my main setup before I mount it though.

This device will bitstream Dolby TrueHD over HDMI to a compatible receiver. I remuxed an EVO file (Bourne Ultimatum HD-DVD rip) containing VC-1 video and TrueHD audio into a M2TS file using TsRemux and it played great over my 100Mbps wired network. Finally got to see that TrueHD light up on my Onkyo 705 receiver. I didn't have anything with DTS-HD MA available to test.

I think I'll give this a chance over the holiday weekend and see if it worth keeping or deturmined to be returned before the (Free Trial Period) Best Buy return policy expires. Frankly even the old one was better then using a PS3 or XBOX 360 with or without TVERSITY as they don't like subs and hate MKV and dual audio.

I love my PS3, I just run PS3 media server and I have no prob watching anything MKV and all

Put me on that "monster Windows 7 / CableCARD Media Center rig" list.

Netflix?

Just add MediaMall's PlayOn ( http://www.themediamall.com/playon/ ). It works with any DLNA compliant device. I use it with my XBMC Xbox, Xbox360, PS3, and Wii. Netflix works pretty well.

This is a very nice box. Netflix would be nice as it's the second reason why I keep my Tivo box. With the new network connector, and DLNA support, this box is showing a lot of promise. I already have the original box, and my only complaint about it was the lack of a network port. This is the most affordable, and reliable, boxes out there right now.

It does bitstream Dolby TrueHD according to AVS forums but no DTS-MA support because Western Digital cheaped out. My egreat m34a bitstreams both and it sounds awesome.

Yes it does. I played a number of video files that have DTS-MA just fine.

This thing looks pretty sweet.
But I'm wondering what the UI is like...hoping a vid pops up on youtube soon so I can see it in action.
Joe Gillespie @ Oct 13th 2009 9:35AM
I picked my WDTV Live at Best Buy last night. The UI is very similar to the WDTV, except there is an appreciable increase in the speed. Much faster for navigation, loading network info, etc. Also, since the device natively supports networking, it discovers new network connections and UPNP-AV media servers without having to restart the device. Thus, you can hotswap external drives/NAS all day long without any need for rebooting the WDTV Live. Great job WD!

what would be the preferred way to connect this to a wifi adapater? I have an old linksys USB 802.11g adapter...would that work with this unit?
I have a mixed 2.4ghz G/5ghz N wifi network, but don't own a draft-N adapter.
