Upgrading a Win7 Media Center with CableCARD from RC to RTM is painless
We have to admit that when we upgraded from Windows 7 RC to RTM we were a little apprehensive to use the upgrade hack, but if we had any CableCARD recordings we wanted to watch after the upgrade, then maybe we would've chosen a different route. Well it appears our fears were unfounded as the upgrade is actually pretty painless. In the linked how to, we learned how to hack the Windows 7 RTM install disc to allow an upgrade from RC, then watched as Windows 7 pretty much took care of the rest -- without losing access to DRM'd recordings. For an added twist, the author was using a DIY CableCARD machine so it was also good to see that OSFRLoader still works on the RTM build as we all wait patiently for Microsoft to release the utility to unleash Digital Cable Tuner to the world.

Ben .. When MS releases it Will that unlock my current locked recordings .. or only future ones ?
I totally forgot that it would lockdown all the show i had already recorded
Anyone know a way to unlock them ?
Thanks

It will unlock none.
If you upgrade to RTM / Install unreleased new ATI firmware
and THEN when you record a show that is flagged as "copy freely" will it be DRM free.
There won't be any unlocking of old shows

I would have done this a long time ago, except that the ACM student membership ($19 for students of a college, or people who claim they are) only includes Windows 7 pro on their MSDNAA.
I am fine with pro, (don't need bitlocker) but I can't upgrade my RC Ultimate to RTM pro. So my cable card machine is still on RC. All my other comps are on RTM Pro, since ACM gives you a whole load of free copies of Win7 Pro.
Gotta say though, I am lovin' it. (even more than Mcdonalds ;-)

where can i find the unreleased ati firmware?my ati digital cable tuner is not recognized by rc1 or 7 ultimate (got it with my party pack).

The firmware isn't released yet, probably next thursday (10/22/09), but it won't help. If the DCT doesn't show up in Device Manger you can't even apply it.
