Livestream Livepack: a 'satellite television truck in a backpack'
"Game changing" is thrown around way too frequently these days, but man, this thing just might be. The Livepack is being described as "a satellite television truck in a backpack" by creator Livestream, and for all intents and purposes, it is. Put simply (or as simply as possible), the pack includes everything one would need to stream "HD quality" footage: encoding hardware, a Firewire cable and the real kicker, a built-in wireless connection with six load-balanced 3G modems over three carriers (AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint if you have to know). Users simply provide their own camcorder, mash a button when it's show time, and out goes the signal. The Livepack can currently be rented for $2,500 per month (includes 30 hours of streaming) or $1,500 per month if you commit to a year-long agreement. So, who's up for showing the world their high school prom live in HD? Demo vid is after the break.

Doesn't look like this is actually HD, they keep talking about DV.

@(Unverified) Hello and congratulations for that but I agree, is it really HD ? I mean ON2 is providing good codecs but VP6 is a bit old and only pushes SD to the limit. I can show you a true HD video to see the difference. This article provides a good sample for you all to review: http://www.thehdstandard.com/hd-broadcaster/

Ok, so maybe it's not HD, especially at 700kbps, but that is SICK! I want one, and I don't know what I would use it for. The vide actually says 8 3G modems, not 6. I would also like to see something like HD-SDI or even SD-SDI in, but you can still send HD, at least HDV, over Firewire.

It's not quite a 'satellite television truck' replacement though, is it? You still have to be somewhere within the range of three mobile operators to use it.

Thank God the networks don't use this junk.
Consider the scenario, Sept 11 and all the cell service in manhattan is down because WT 1 & 2 fell. Not just their cell site but all the microwave relays from the cell sites in the 'burbs
that were within range of Ground Zero.
OK, you've got to get the picture to the networks RIGHT NOW. The assignment desk doesn't want to hear "no signal".
When the cell system comes back up, first responders have QOS priority over Joe Average cell user. "no signal" still.
Sat trucks are lots of things production capacity, generators, and shelter. Wanna be outside when your batteries are dead, breathing the air with stuff falling from the sky?
I hate it when companies hawk their product as a replacement for a live truck, sat truck, post house or other transmission facility.
One thing these rediculous comparisons achieve -it helps them sell lots of stuff to suckers who think they're buying the equivalent of a $2M sat truck.
