Panasonic Full HD 3D experience eyes-on

Active shutter 3D technology once again did not fail to impress, though large format action content like the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony and action sports footage was far more impressive than the movie trailer. The benefit of a picture where everything, regardless of distance from the camera, is in focus is one of the biggest benefits 3D has going for it and nothing makes that more apparent than video from a large stadium. Aside from a few glitches from a pair of the glasses being low on battery and flickering annoyingly throughout, the framerate was smooth and the picture sharp, a marked difference from the jittery motion we witnessed during JVC's 3D demo earlier in the day.

With Sony jumping on board it certainly appears Panasonic has everything lined up for acceptance as a Blu-ray standard, and we fully expect to see 3D televisions and assorted hardware on shelves by next year's holiday season. This weekend ESPN tests 3D broadcasts with the USC/Ohio State game, focusing there would do more for 3D backers benefit than pumping up films, which simply don't do enough to bring the effect past "nice gimmick" status. The 3D Full HD truck tour will likely be coming through your town sometime in the next year, I definitely advise checking it out.

Nice writeup. I'm definitely looking forward to the Panasonic 3D truck making around to my neck of the woods!

Ha, ha people who need glasses to see can't use these....

Second picture. (Also, I wear glasses)

Although the 3D glasses can be worn over regular glasses. It's awkward and heavy (even if you don't wear glasses to begin with). I can't imagine using it for more than 20 minutes. Even the 10 minutes demo feels too long to wear those heavy glasses.
I wish they just use passive system (circular polarizer a'la the ones used for comercial theatres). It's already proven to work and it's cheaper to buy the glasses (about $10 as opposed $100+ for LCD Shutter Glasses system)

I want to see what the quality is like on these. Ive seen every recent 3d movie in the theatres and they have all been a huge let down. Best of the bunch has been My bloody Valentine, but even then, the picture quality takes a huge hit when you put those crazy glasses on. Im not willing to sacrifice PQ for a gimmick.

Really? You didn't care much for the 3D and you didn't enjoy the 3D movie 'Up'? I'm disappointed to hear that. I've yet to see Up but have heard the 3D scenes are done pretty well for effect but also not too over done.
Darren @ Sep 11th 2009 1:43PM
I too, have been severely disappointed with 3D thus far.
I'm seeing Up tomorrow, and I sincerely hope the 3D is effective and doesn't infringe upon the viewing experience.
I saw Beowulf in 3D. The picture was dull and blurry. I had to focus and concentrate intently on the image to see it clearly.
What's with all this 3D garbage anyway?
Why do we need better than razor sharp 2D 1080P? Isn't that good enough?
Who can be bothered to put on a pair of goggles every time to watch TV anyway?

A peek at me 5 years in the future......
"Hey everybody! I just got the latest release and it's in 3D!!!"
"Uh-oh. My glasses aren't charged up. I'll have to watch it another time."

I'm guessing this doesn't work on their plasmas though.
David Susilo @ Sep 11th 2009 9:50PM
It was shown on their 103" plasma.

My problem is: I'm about to build my dedicated theater and I'm going with projection. I haven't heard anything about 3d projectors...
Wes @ Sep 13th 2009 4:33AM
Buy a cheaper projector, upgrade again in 3-4 years?
Wes @ Sep 13th 2009 4:40AM
Its simply better to see the subtle curves of ...areas in 3D. Life-like realism.
