ASUS EeeBox EB1012 teases home theaters with dual-core Atom and Ion graphics
Looks like our dreams of a discrete, low cost home theater PC are about to be realized. ASUS has a new EeeBox PC EB1012 touting a dual-core Atom N330 (just as rumored), NVIDIA MCP7A ION graphics, a 250GB SATA hard disk, 2GB of DDR2-800 memory expandable to 4GB, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi, S/PDIF 5.1 audio jack, and HDMI out. As such, this little 222 x 178 x 26.9mm box should handle your hardware accelerated 1080p content just as readily as it does full-screen Flash video from Hulu and beyond -- a place where single-core Atom-based Ion nettops fail. It also features an eSATA jack, 4x USB ports, and an SDHC card reader for plugging in more media. No word on price or ship date but we'll keep an eye out.

I'm gunna take a stab and say it doesn't bitstream. Is Ion at least capable of 5.1 pcm? and I don't mean spdif passthrough.
Still, from reviews I've seen the 330 plus Ion just BARELY can do bluray without hiccup. And thats if you do zero multitasking (no background processes)
I suppose it might do though for the second room just to play stuff of the network.

Poll: Will this box be more or less powerful than the Lenovo Q700

Very nice, but I would still rather see a system like this built with a 45mn low power core2 or phenom II cpu. The box might need to get a little wider to compensate for the added heat, but it could still be pretty small, and be much more capable for about the same price.
For instance, the Zotac ITX ION boards with dual core atom run about $180 give or take. But the Zotac 9300 board has the same GPU as the ION and a 775 socket. It runs about $120 and an E6300 is about $80. So for only $20 more, you get a MUCH more powerful CPU. I have to believe that the same math would hold true for an EeeBox.

That actually looks pretty interesting. With a Windows Media Center remote control and the latest copy of Boxee running, that could in fact be a HTPC I could use in the bedroom. Hope its reasonably priced and Windows 7 runs stable on it.

Where's the IR port? I'm just saying... if your going to go that far why forget that.
