LG bared the fruits of its
OLED labor last week with a
new set of photos of its gorgeous 15-inch screen, and now comes word from
Reuters that it's gearing up to become consumer reality. The company will be showing off the model at next week's IFA trade show, and then expects to start selling it in Korea this November, followed by overseas sometime next year. Excited? You bet. Affordable? Price unknown, with Sony's two-year old 11-inch
XEL-1 still retailing for $2,500 in the US -- and
worse elsewhere -- you can expect to be sacrificing a pretty penny for small-screen bliss. LG also plans to show off a 40-inch OLED in the "not too distant future," but don't expect to be seeing that hit retail shelves for a good long time to come.

LG stated in ~June that this size of OLED screen would be costing them about two and a half times more than the cost to produce the same size LCD (and this is just for now due to the new fabrication, it should become less to produce than LCD as soon as scale is reached). They also made a cross licensing agreement with Kodak when newer & better technologies were available and they'll have a limited time for this to be a high priced product since there are numerous better & more efficient processes coming along rapidly. So I'm willing to speculate that they will significantly undercut Sony's introductory price point, because they would still be making a killing at under 2k retail and even for under 1k for that matter, + LG is more likely than Sony to be planning to go after a much broader market, if priced ~under 900 could it have wide appeal?
Anyway, for me this is it, and FINALLY! It's not just that it's a far superior technology ( actually beginning to approach nature), it's also incomparably better for the environment in all respects, that's at least half the selling point/value of OLED!!!
... The way it's designed on its stand & with the port layouts already suggests the next Dell XPS iteration?!

Yummy... watched a few scenes from Ironman on the Sony OLED at the local Sony Store this week-end. What a display that little thing is: the color and black levels are incredible on that tiny little screen. Makes Sony's best LCD display look pants, for sure. But 11 inches it can't compete with my Kuro 151 but the next telly I buy will definitely be an OLED. Glad to hear LG is coming to market - competition is a good thing. Here's a small tip: Make it LARGER! I would consider buying at 30 inches to go in the bedroom.
