MediaGate's MG-M²TV, world's first superscripted HD media player, is now available
Most other places will simply refer to this as the M2TV, but we're not that lazy. For you, readers, we'll dig out our bag of magical key combinations and do it the proper way: MediaGate's MG-M²TV. Beyond the needlessly elevated name what we have here is a reasonably comprehensive media player with a title far more interesting than its look. That boring black box houses a lot of functionality, including compatibility with oodles of video formats like AVI, WMV9, MKV, Xvid, H.264 -- and even RealVideo for some reason (yes, RealNetworks is still around). Music and image formats are equally comprehensive, there's even subtitle support, and it can all be sent to your HDTV at 1080p over HDMI or Component (check out the outputs after the break). It'll take media from a USB HDDs, memory cards, and there are plans for a WiFi module in the not too distant future. MSRP is $119, but we're finding it for around $100, meaning WD's HD Media Player has a little competition on its hands.

Needs network support, hardwired out of the box and wifi add on option would be ideal to keep costs down. till then, popcorn hour.

No network capabilities? FAIL...
DrJJPickles @ Jul 24th 2009 10:11AM
How can it not have at least hardwired capability? Who would want this box at any price? Either the PCH C-200 or the Hauppauge MediaMVP-HD for me!

The Xtreamer already beats this device hands down.

What a crappy design... the ONLY (responsible) WAY to get media to this thing is USB and THE ONLY USB port is on the front, BEHIND A DOOR? Wow.

I just got done trying out a Mvix Ultio MX-800HD and for the price (164 + shipping), it wins the bang for the buck war hands down.

WDTV is much slicker IMO. Very nice and compact look. For the ~10% price premium what does functionality does this bring that the WDTV doesn't?
The WDTV is easily hackable to include wifi in ~5 minutes.
For this to contend it needs to get a helluva lot prettier, cheaper or more functional.

I have had Mediagate (MG-35 w/ NDAS) before and its pretty versatile. I had it for 3 years before it died. I have abused it enough to say it performed very well. I have tried both network player (NDAS) and wired standalone (using component). The network mode buffered and the quality wasnt as good. It was faster to transfer the file and use as standalone.
This would be something I would consider.

Can it decode DTS? Seems a lot of these devices lack that functionality due to licensing cost...
