LG's THX-certified LH90 LCD HDTVs now shipping in US
We've been following LG's 240Hz LH90 series of LED-backlit HDTVs since they were launched alongside oodles of internet-connected rivals at CES, and now -- at long last -- the 1080p trio is shipping to US soil. The sets, which are the first-ever to boast THX certification, also feature an ambient light sensor, 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 240Hz dejudder technology and a super glossy bezel. If you're jonesing to get one in your abode, you can cruise over to your nearest electronics dealer and part ways with $3,199.95 (55-inch), $2,399.95 (47-inch), or $1,899.95 (42-inch).

How are these the first sets to have THX-certification? There are a bunch of THX displays out there, including some LG plasmas.
corey smith @ Jul 23rd 2009 12:32PM
he meant to say theyre the first LCDs ever to boast a THX certification...
Ferry @ Jul 22nd 2009 4:48PM
Maybe it's the first lcd with thx? Everybody knows plasma is the best, but lcd is getting better.
But $3000 for a 55 inch lcd? Don't make me laugh! For that kind of money I can by a 60 inch Pioneer (60 inch 5090) wich is a reference model in hdtv's

I am sure many gamers out there disagree strongly with your statement - myself included.

Care to explain why?

My Pannie plasma has THX certification....
Shenanigans @ Jul 22nd 2009 5:13PM
I am in for 3. Those specs sound GOOD!

Super Glossy Bezel = detriment, not a benefit
A wish they would stop doing this. I don't need reflections to see the rest of the room. It is distracting.
Cap BD @ Jul 22nd 2009 8:24PM
I'll take a THX certified Panasonic instead. For the price of one of these, I can have 2 of those.

We have had these sets at my Best Buy for about 2 weeks now, the first one we set up was a bad one, hope they all arent bad :S
Escher @ Jul 23rd 2009 12:39AM
I got mine 2 weeks ago now, and it's a great set. I got the 55" version, though I certainly didn't pay $3200! If you're not afraid of internet buying, you can get it for under $2400 from at least 2 places I know of, including the place I got mine from.
I wasn't actually aware this thing was THX certified, but that's cool I guess. Just another marketing label though, really. If you ask me, the best thing about THX is their trademark sound that plays before some movies and when my TiVo reboots. If you have good speakers, it can shake the room. :) Other than that, it's more a selling point than a real technological benchmark.
This really is a good TV, I'm glad I waited for it instead of picking up the thin Samsung edge-lit LED LCDs that were instock at Best Buy. It was a little nailbiting to buy something like this sight-unseen since nobody had them in yet, but I'm glad I took the chance.
BTW, don't fret too much about the bezel. It's a pretty big bezel, true, and it is reflective, but it's also not flat. It's actually contoured, so you don't get direct reflections like a mirror. And the screen is NOT reflective at all, which is really really nice in my opinion.
Anyway, from someone who owns one, I have no reservations recommending this to anyone who isn't dead-set on plasma. It's nearly as good as one for contrast ratio, black levels and motion. Better than any other LCD I've ever seen anyway.
Ken @ Jul 23rd 2009 2:38AM
I agree this LG is one hell of a TV. Best LCD out there I just love it. Much better than the Samsungs on motion, color and picture. Took back the Samsung 8000 55 and got the LG and could not be happier.
Bryan Mayland @ Jul 23rd 2009 9:16AM
I have one of these, paid $2300 delivered from an online dealer. It really is a great looking set and the best part is that all the "professional level" settings are exposed right from the menu. You want to do a 10 point IRE grayscale calibration? Right in the menu. Adjust Color and Tint of your pure primaries and secondaries? Right in the menu.
And even though it puts out 50ftL with the backlight set to 40/100, the power usage is moderate. ~130W at the wall when viewing a white screen, down to ~35W for black, average about 100W.
The serious downside of this set is that it only has 80 local dimming zones. It isn't something I notice normally, but when viewing a bright object way off angle you can definitely see halos.
Bryan Mayland @ Jul 23rd 2009 9:24AM
^^^ $2400 for the 55" I should have said
riverside_guy @ Jul 23rd 2009 11:40AM
I normally love Samsung, but they are putting high gloss screens on all sets so it's torch mode all the time, not to mention I went LCD in the first place because I would have serious glare issues with gloss screens. Sony seems to be doing the same, but I'm ecstatic LG seems to be bucking that dastardly trend.
That being said, doesn't there seem to be a disproportionate price differential between 42" and 47"?
GK @ Jul 24th 2009 1:07PM
This TV isn't that great. It's ISF Calibration modes and THX modes are off (mainly the colors), still best if you buy a calibration.. In our Best Buy store, we have it in a studio room next to a Panasonic S1 that performs better than it, so God forbid if we were to put the G10 by it. Really disappointed in this set from LG.
Pop @ Jul 24th 2009 1:57PM
THX modes should not be "off". Defeats the purpose.
Are you sure the set isn't bad?
corey smith @ Jul 23rd 2009 12:37PM
didnt S&V do a review of this set a few months back?...

Thats the LG90 series, not the LH90...
I just picked up the 55LH90 and it is a pretty sweet set. Got it for WAY less than the MSRP though.
(TV+Stand+3year-warranty+tax) = $2,566
Johnny Neat @ Jul 23rd 2009 1:29PM
My question: Can it beat Panasonic's Viera TC-PXXV10s? Or in that realm the Pioneer's?
Johnny Neat @ Jul 23rd 2009 1:30PM
Also wanted to add that I own a Samsung LN52A750 and, although I'd love to have it's newer older brother the B750, I think it's a badass LCD still to this day. I just think I'd love to have a Pioneer or Panny V10 plasma in the 60" range for the living-room for my main movie watching and move the Sammy into the bedroom for gaming and slack movie watching.
Ferry @ Jul 25th 2009 7:59PM
Dr Evil, why did you say: "I am sure many gamers out there disagree strongly with your statement - myself included?"
I use my plasma for 80% gaming. The motion resolution is much much higher with a plasma. Most full hd lcd's don't go higher than 600 against 1080 for the latest Pana and Pioneer. Even my 50 inch hdready has got a higher motion resolution than these full hd lcd's!
The refreshrate of a modern lcd is 2-6 ms, a plasma does 0,001ms.
These plasma's also have a game-mode, with pixelshift. Burn in? Old news. I'm gaming hours at a time and ofcourse there is no burn in.
The only reason that lcd's are popular with gamers, is that the first time most people saw a hdtv, was on a Samsung lcd on the xbox360 stands.
When friends who has got full hd lcd's see my hdready plasma, they cannot believe there eyes.
