How-to: Build an HD Media Center for under $1000
You probably thought we had all the fun at Engadget HD, but you'd be wrong. Because sometimes the crew over at classic Engadget reaches over and surprises even us. This latest How-To is right up our alley and as extensive as any feature we've done. So click on over and check it out, just be sure you didn't have anything else planned for this afternoon as this is going to take awhile.

What about being wall mountable? Did you forget that option?

I am on vacation and would like to watch some CableCARD recorded content. It hit me this week. If "Ben's hack" that allows ATI's cc tuners to be used with ?any? motherboard opens many doors. I haven't had a chance to play with this, but why not put a closed laptop in the armoir?
At this point I have no idea what video cards with good output are available, nor am I familiar with laptops with SPDIF or hard drive capabilities. Maybe just use HDMI out with audio pass-thru on the TV? Maybe a 1.5TB external drive would work? Certainly Windows Home Server would work, but it isn't as portable for travel. The point being, it would be neat to take the whole media center with you on vacation. It seems like this could be less than $1000 (plus ATI tuners). Any thoughts here?
