Here in South Jamaica NY, I've just gotten wired up for FIOS (and I'm ditching Time Warner next month) but there's nothing in the news about it?? I guess the big V considers non-rich neighborhoods whose inhabitants are predominantly black and hispanic like mine aren't worth (even) a note in the press release, though... go figure.
NorthCranky @ Jun 28th 2009 5:04PM
Why you even complain is beyond me.
Many opposite like neighborhoods can't even get it. At least you have it.
normychas @ Jun 28th 2009 5:18PM
absolutely Terry. You figured it out. Verizon's big plan is to bring the fastest internet in the country to primarily black and hispanic neighborhoods and than hide it. That way they can.......... wait im not exactly sure what this gains them but it must be something. I live in northern VA where only DC has FIOS becauase of the enormous efforts the local DC government went through to get FIOS into the city. Lets all relax and remember that this is a tiny little press release regarding local fios enhancements for the entire country.

Wow, what was I thinking -- I should ignore the fact that the... let's call them "white areas" (you know, for contrast's sake) got FIOS early, hard, and fast (along with nice press releases,) but the "black areas" had to wait (but by far are largely still waiting) for years after until Verizon decides it's time to move in -- which totally doesn't seem like it's quite reluctantly at all only because it's technically part of "NYC."
Thanks for pointing out the complete absence of any discrepancies whatsoever between the premium services made available to the "white areas" and places that, despite having the denser population, just so happen to be "black areas." Nope, thanks for making it so clear that no ethnic group(s) are an after thought in this equation, or are being given the "second-class-service" for the "second-class-citizen" treatment at all.
Why I ever thought I had reason to complain is beyond me. My previous insinuation that this was some nefarious plot by verizon to play hide'n'seek with their service just seems way off because that's certainly what I was getting at.

You are making home TV service a racial issue, really, is your life that sad? I know, get Sharpton on the case, he will make sure that FiOS service in predominately minority neighborhoods gets the rightful publicity it deserves!!! Rise up against the man Terry, make sure the outside world knows that no matter your skin color you too can receive the fastest internet service! FiOS at last! FiOS at last! Thank God allmighty FiOS at last!

Well over the past decade and change since coming to the good 'ol USA, landing in brooklyn (and recently moving to queens,) I just find it hard not to point out more instances of quality and service deprivation that I've been victim and witness to - from food, education, and even sanitation all the way to (gasp) technology and information. The indignation I felt at hearing "FIOS is available to NYC residents," but learning shortly thereafter it really meant "FIOS is available to NYC residents.. except the colors" was - according to you, at least - misplaced. Guess I'll roll with that. Spotting, and making note of another instance of a trend (very much still present in corporate America) of institutionalized racism is taboo.
I once was blind, but now I see!! Some would rather have their dignity than faster porn and a new way to watch the same TV, but I guess I should heed the self-satisfying shi... that is to say "advice" excreting from a joe-asinine with enough cheek to insinuate that I should be content with what's given - despite the blatant racial indifference with which it has been offered - because he/she can't get access the same TV and download their porn as fast...
Why don't you offer us all more nuggets of wisdom! Care to share how you make those white sheets more pointy at the head-part as your brethren? I calls 'em like I sees 'em...

1) I'm an American of Cuban descent, so your jump to call me a member of the Klan is as misplaced as your attempt to add a racial element to cable TV expansion.
2) You know, Verizon is running a business, and thus why would they offer a premium service to an area where it seems that very few would be able to pay for it? Some estimates place the cost of running fiber optic cable to the premises at almost $3,000 per subscriber! It would be neigh impossible for people in low-income areas (regardless of race) to provide the subscriber numbers for Verizon to make any kind of reasonable return on investment. The constitution does not promise you fast internet, but it sure as hell offers the freedom for you to work your ass off to afford it... maybe if more people had that drive in your community Verizon would see it as a lucrative investment opportunity. You can only play the victim for so long before you have to take responsibility for your own surroundings and work to make a better future for you and your neighbors. My grandparents came to this country to escape life under Castro's rule, they worked hard all their lives and never once had to ask the government for any kind of handout, and when the first neighborhood they moved into went bad... they--GASP--worked harder so they could afford to move!!!! Its all about personal responsibility. This is the 21st century, and while race-relations may not be perfect, they are better than they ever have, and if the biggest thing you have to bitch about is that your internet aint as fast as whitey's and not that you are barred from drinking from the same water fountain... then I would say that you would have to agree.
3) This guy is probably a troll and I just took the bait.
NorthCranky @ Jun 29th 2009 3:04PM
Turn that frown upside down man YOU GOT FIOS.
magicvash @ Jun 28th 2009 5:08PM
And yet again those of us in Rochester, NY are stuck with TWC's monopoly with no chance of ever getting FiOS
Brian @ Jun 28th 2009 7:00PM
Have to say that FiOS is also expanding in my area in Edmonds,WA. Just 2 cities North of Seattle, WA. They do have it in Edmonds already but not in my area but they stoppped by last week about setting up a time to survey the area and then to install it a few weeks later. So exciting! I hate Comcast!
Bob @ Jun 29th 2009 2:33PM
First link is broken and points to the HBO story!
Living in Central New York, I'd really like to read that first story...
NoAndThen @ Jun 30th 2009 4:15PM
Im sick of reading about all the FIOS expansion whilst knowing that we're not going to get it until at LEAST 2015 here in Boston, as our damn infrastructure is so old. Please VZ, give me an alternative to Comcast!
