Harman Kardon brings Blu-ray to America with BDP 1 deck
See that player right there? It looks really familiar, doesn't it? Aside from a power adapter that's suited for use in the United States of America, it's essentially the BDP 10 sans a zero. Shortly after announcing its first Blu-ray deck overseas, Harman Kardon has seen fit to offer up a model here in the States, with BD-Live functionality, a USB socket, HDMI 1.3a, Ethernet, IR-remote in / out jacks, optical / coaxial digital audio outputs and support for all the major audio formats. The pain? $499, and it should start filtering into retailers as early as this month.

That's a lot less pain than I anticpated based on the brutal european pricing.

Feature wise, this sounds close to the Oppo player, and for the same price. Anyone care to share their opinion of which might be better? Both of them lack streaming video features which is a nice bonus of the LG and Samsung players if you want to conserve space (which I do).

The Oppo is going to be better as its feature set is a little more robust and it comes with the what is consider one of the best scalers on the market.

Does anyone here actually own the Oppo blu-ray player? Or are we all just reading the specs & comparing? Either way, what I would like to know is: what are the start up times for blu-ray discs on the HK player? I know I read that the Oppo player is ridiculously fast loading a blu-ray (like 3-4 seconds, compared to other players that take 30-45 seconds or more). That is a big deal to me. I would love it if the HK player loads up BD's as quick as that.

Sorry, this does not really compare to the Oppo BDP83 which in addtion to all that this player does, the Oppo also has 7.1 analog out, 2 USB ports, both usable at the same time, SACD, DVD=A. this player won't hold a candle to the Oppo and yes, I own the Oppo player, it's incredibly fast loading for all media it plays and it has a dedicated analog stereo out too. i'd sleep with my oppo if i could!

I own the Oppo also, hands down the best player on the market, it puts my PS3 to shame, while I use to use the PS3 for anything and everything I played now its growing cob webs as it has very little else to do over the oppo other than gaming. My average looking blu rays on the PS3 now shine with the best of them when played through the Oppo, oh did I memtion the 7.1 analog is a god send, couple that to my 700 watt Onkyo THX certified receiver who needs the theater any longer.
