Because you can't get it in 4K. The Sony runs the left eye on the top of it's chip and the right eye on the bottom and then uses a special lens to converge the two images on screen. The Sony doesn't have to alternate the images the way that DLP based projectors do though.
This news isn't really a huge deal though, Barco has had a system like this for a while and Christie's is on the way. This is an upgrade to the DLP formatter system that allows for better bandwidth to the DLP chip to allow it to run at full resolution during 3D.
