The Sony runs the left eye on the top of it's chip and the right eye on the bottom and then uses a special lens to converge the two images on screen. The Sony doesn't have to alternate the images the way that DLP based projectors do though.

This news isn't really a huge deal though, Barco has had a system like this for a while and Christie's is on the way. Here in San Diego almost every theater is showing 3D now. In fact I'm lucky to live just 5 min from an Ultrastar Theaters which from what I understand is one of the few (if not the only ) theater to have DLP in every theater and show 99% of its movies in Pure Digital. Its not worth the extra money. I just saw UP in 3D at one of the start of the art theaters around here and though the movie looked good, the 3D is lacking. So far I have not been impressed with any of the 3D movies that has been made. Maybe it just doesn't work on me. Sure there were some spots with some good depth to them but nothing all that great.

I wish they would drop this 3D push for games and movies. Plus the glasses suck. They make watching the movie worse.

Josh

Comments on NEC upgrades DLP projectors for higher res 3D in time for the premiere of Up

I also think 3D movie in theater is a rip off for cost almost the same as Imax, i saw alien vs monter in Imax 3D, it look good but little virtual are stand out, i much prefer those 3d in amusement park like terminator and shrek.

Richard
