Sony PlayTV already working (a little) in New Zealand
How close is Sony's PlayTV DVR to working with New Zealand broadcasts? Very, or so it would seem, one reader wrote in to let us know the UK PlayTV unit he brought down to NZ in '08 has, since the 2.10 firmware update, put its DVB-T compatibility to work and started picking up some broadcasts. So far he's able to catch TV3 in 1080i and AC3 surround and even pause and buffer video, but no program scheduling support. On the other 7 Freeview channels? Video, but no audio so far. Sony hasn't documented any New Zealand compatibility in its upgrades, but at least judging by one users experience everything is being "worked in" in good time.[Thanks, Jim]

it is possible in the us, at least as far as the technology is concerned, especially after the digital transition. from my (limited) understanding, it might not make economic sense, because americans, at least in the u.s., generally go with a cable company like comcast, as opposed to getting ota broadcasting. the people here that do get ota generally aren't the same people who would have a ps3. although with the current recession, this may be changing, as cable tv seems to be one of the first things to be cut out of a tight family budget (i know we just got rid of comcast in favor of free ota). personally i'm hopeful that this will make it to the u.s., as i'd like to have an almost one stop shop for all my media/games.

If this is released in NZ within the next three months, I'll definitely spring for one of these over a Freeview|HD box.

Some major developments PlayTV should be fully up and running in New Zealand with next firmware update.
Mark Bunting Producer of PlayTV UK has started a blog and is answering questions with VERY incouraging news for New Zealand.
All we need is AAC/AAC+ support, Dolby Digital 5.1 (at the moment PlayTV only supports DD2.0) and MPEG-4 recording....all of this is being addressed!!
The only thing left is the New Zealand MHEG5 EPG support (at the moment PlayTV supports the EIT EPG which in New Zealand PlayTV works fine on now and next and 5 to 10 events ahead)
