Public rage stalls Time Warner trials of consumption-based internet
Time Warner's new data capping broadband scheme was never expected to win any popularity contests, and the details of its plans are so frustrating, that this probably should not come as a surprise. Regardless, it looks like the company's plan to further roll out testing of the consumption-based billing method has been foiled, or at least stalled, because it couldn't find enough customers to participate in the testing. TWC had planned to test in several locations, including San Antonio and Austin, Texas, but the response has apparently been so negative, and there were so many complaints, that the company has "delayed" the trials until October. So... maybe if we keep moaning about it the plan will be abandoned altogether? Here's to hoping, anyway. [Via The Register]

Heh, the power to not bend over and take it without complaint is finally becoming an effective prophylactic.
People, keep it up!
We shall overcome!

This Endadget post is not accurate. The article states that FRONTIER is shelving plans for metered internet - not TW. I live in Rochester - the test market that TW is going to rape starting this summer and they are NOT backing down. There is a strong movement in Rochester and the other test markets that has so far been successful at getting a ton of media attention - so hopefully our outrage will succeed. But, I must repeat, the tests are scheduled to begin this August in Rochester. Head over to www.stopthecap.com for more info.

Wow - I spoke too soon - apparently Senator Charles Schumer came to Rochester today for a very public appearance to oppose the TW initiative and now TW has stated that they are shelving all plans for caps in Rochester! Victory for the consumers!

You mean they don't want to piss off the customers with the guns, eh?
Smart move, Time warner...smart move...

Let's hope that people don't stop complaining. TWC deserves to lose all its customers for this bullcrap. I'm so happy that Frontier decided to screw Time Warner over and keep up the unlimited data consumption. Honestly, we don't need to be turning into Europe right now. When that congressman said that this will hamper our competitiveness, he is absolutely right. I hope the telcoms can spread fiber to everybody and give everyone the choice between the watered down crap of the past and the internet and HD options of the future that fiber provides. I can't WAIT to switch to FIOS or U-Verse when either one gets down here.

HOOORAYY!! i think these practices should be regulated until there is SOME kind of actual competition or choice available to customers. In my area I can get 22mb time warner... or 1.5mb AT&T. That is not a choice!
Deathwish238 @ Apr 16th 2009 2:54PM
lol, it's true...we most of us in Texas do have guns.
I hate that I can only get TW where I am. Luckily I am moving soon and hopefully will be able to get U Verse.

This isn't consumption based internet. There's a still a monthly charge. It's only a scheme to extract more money out of users in addition to the monthly charges.
I'm sure glad I have FIOS. I may have to move though. And it's' not everywhere around here.
