By and large, one
Blu-ray recorder is just the same as the another. Not so with Sony's latest duo, which both come ready to toast material to blank BD-R media and tap into the wide world of internet video. Both the BDZ-A750 (320GB) and the BDZ-A950 (500GB) are able to stream and download video from
Tsutaya TV and
acTVila VOD services in Japan, and moreover, they can forward that material to a PSP or other compatible DAP via USB. In case that's not enough, the duo is also DLNA compatible, and the HDMI output ensures crisp, clean 1080p output. So, ready to change your mind on that whole "
would you buy a Blu-ray recorder?" question?

Is it just me or is there no component out on this thing?
madgamer @ Mar 28th 2009 10:03PM
Not just you, it's not there. It does have USB ports and built in tuners though...

Componenet out? why would you want a ferrari and put bicycle tires on it?
FNG @ Mar 28th 2009 10:19PM
They did put bicycle tires on it. I see composite and S-Video.
component is HD video, just like HDMI, unless you drink Sony kool-aid. Now I do prefer HDMI over component just like you may, but let's not treat component like a step child without beating those other composite and S-Video inputs like they deserve.

A lot of us still use those killer Sony Trinitron XBR (KD-34XBR960) and Pioneer Elite (rear projection) 1080i CRTs which produce better color and smoother images than some of the best LCDs. Component would be very welcomed to us analogue nuts.

Yes componenet is hd, but having a single cable instead of 3 or 6(stereo) is much more appealing to me.

Oppo, I hope you are listening. Make a DVR with BD, build it on linux, make it developer friendly, allow users to install plug ins and modify the source code. Make it the Firefox of BD-DVR players.

So, can I record HD shows off my DirecTV DVR (HR-20) onto these Blu-ray recorders?
Thank you.
demon @ Mar 30th 2009 7:13PM
No. This device is only available in Japan, where they have actual standards, instead of telling the sat providers "do whatever you want".
demon @ Mar 30th 2009 7:18PM
No. This device is only available in Japan, where they have these funny things called "standards". They don't just let the satellite providers do whatever proprietary stuff they want.

Even if i get one of these BD-Recorders in Japan -in Tokyo for work in august- will i manage to pass the HD recordings in my Directv DVR to the BD gear? And if so, provided the DVR only has S-video out and the BD-R only S-video in, will it be hidef or just 400lines-STD def DVD quality?? Thanks.
