Samsung flip-flops, says mainstream OLED TVs still 5 years out
Hey, wait just a cotton-pickin' minute here! Last April, we caught Samsung asserting that it figured affordable medium-to-large size OLED TVs would be available in 2009 / 2010. Now, we've got Samsung Europe's new President and CEO telling us that "mainstream" OLED sets are still five years out. Believe it or not, said bigwig was quoted as saying that "when it comes to OLED, we have several issues to overcome in terms of technology and production cost," and that it would be "at least four to five years before we see OLED in the market place." Of course, such a quip is to be expected given the quantity of dollars Sammy has poured into LCD, but we're still a bit dismayed by the news. Hear that, entrepreneurs of the world? The time's about right for an OLED-only startup to beat every last one of these traditional powerhouses to the punch.

Its not surprising to say the least... The economy is down and plenty of people are alright with buying LCD's... Though, I am surprised he said it would be 5 years before we see OLED's on the market. I think he might mean that OLED's won't be available in such a capacity that LCD is until 5 years from now, but I fully expect to see 1 or 2 models pop up in a years time.

I'd rather not see them rush it to market. Mature the technology, produce large screens, and make it cheap.
Look at the Sony XEL-1. It's practically unusable and very highly priced.

That is too bad, but I really think that it's due to LCD sales. With resepcts to production cost, everything that I've read over the years say that OLED production is easier and MUCH cheaper to produce than your trditional LCD TV so I dont' think production costs are really the case. Samsungs new Luxia LCD's are expensive but because they are extrememly thin many will buy them and I think they are banking on it. Also, I'm sure they know when their competitors timelines are for OLED as well.
IF they solve some of the lifespan issues then anyone who comes out with an OLED TV in a good size, 42+ would be selling out of them, that is how good they look.

5 years??? that's too bad...with Pioneer out of the picture with their unbelievable Plasmas, nothing on the market especially LCD tvs can provide anything near stunning PQ quality. Man, this sucks...5 years sheesh.
