Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV finally coming to Australia next month
Sony's XEL-1, widely known as the first consumer-level OLED TV to hit the market, has done a pretty decent job of traversing the globe. For reasons unknown, however, it has yet to touch down in the great nation of Australia. Thankfully for deep-pocketed Aussies who passed up on the Kevin37 deal, all that changes next month. CNET is reporting that Sony will launch its 11-inch wonder Down Under in "mid-April," with pricing expected to be anywhere from AU$6,000 ($4,209) to AU$8,000 ($5,612). Call us looney, but we get the idea that most mates will be passing this opportunity up without thinking twice. We mean, do you have any idea how much, um, stuff that kind of dough buys in Nimbin?

Sony must be bonkers as one sale in Australia might just happen (we do have a few loonies down this way). For that price ($8,000) you could have a great trip to the Great Barrier Reef and not rely on OLED’s or have a touch of the weed in Nimbin

What is to stop someone from just importing one? I mean, at that price, even if you had it first class delivered overnight from Japan or something it would still be way cheaper. And you could of had it over a year ago that way. I guess the voltage/plug would be off, but once again, for that kind of dough, you could fix that.

Anyone willing to pay that much for such a tiny TV (OLED or not) should think about donating some of their money to charity.
As clearly, they have way too much to spare.

Ok, I saw this thing in person and the picture was decent, but nothing life changing. So what if it is million to one contrast ratio when it brings nothing new when it comes to picture (increased resolution, more colors, image processing, or whatever). Black is black and it looked black. I saw that before. Besides it is supposed to be very thin, but the base is pretty hefty, making this a pretty thick tv overal just separated. I am waiting for one that is 50" and thin with no base but just 4 hdmi inputs. Yes, that is all I need, 4 HDMI inputs.

I saw one once too, and it was actually beautiful! The color gamut was huge, and it produced the best image I've seen since my CRT. Since the demise of CRT, too many people have accepted the poor black level produced by the very popular LCDs. Black is NOT black on an LCD tito, and I'm guessing you've never really seen a truly deep black level!
However, this device has several problems. First and foremost, you cannot calibrate its greyscale to 65K IRE because it lacks the proper service modes. So while it produces deadly colors, it's not producing *accurate* colors.
Second, it's not HD. It's 960x540p. That's EDTV... basically just a bit better than Standard Definition. (The bozo at the Sony Style Store tried to tell me it "approximates 1080p," which didn't go over well with me, and almost got me kicked out of the store.)
However, as a *proof of concept*, it succeeds marvelously. Great color reproduction -- it obviously can do the colors, it just just needs service mode calibration to do them accurately -- and awesome black level.
