While it sounds great, it's not going to give me much more than I have now using the Nyko Blu-Wave remote dongle. As far as I'm concerned, turning on the PS3 from the remote is overrated, because I only use the PS3 for movies and I am going to be switching the movie in my PS3 95% of the time. I can already turn the PS3 off with the Harmony, because there's a menu option in the XMB to power off.

The only thing I'd really be getting with this is the ability to use Yellow/Blue/Red/Green and the Number keys without having to pull up the on-screen menu with Triangle.

At $10 the Blu-wave dongle works for me.

MoFro

Comments on Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 gets official

I think most ps3 user that cares already have a device that does the same thing already.

mOe

Comments on Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 gets official

But people who don't have a PS3, but might buy one if the price drops may be interested in this. The device is actually really cool and built the proper way. It has no connection to the PS3 at all. What it basically does is listen for IR commands and then converts those commands to Bluetooth. You could have this device on the other side of the room from the PS3 and it will still be able to control it. It's a better solution than the Nyco solution becuase, yes you can turn it on, but one other reason is you can have a much more advanced remote instead of a 20 dollar cheapy. Why would you do that?

For those of you that do not know what macros are, here is the real reason this is exciting. You can buy a much better remote and program macros into the remote. A macro might do the following as an example.

I can program a macro button called 'Movies' and the button can do the following macros when I click it all automatically and in the order I specify. Also very useful to power everything down fast.
1. Turn on the receiver
2. Switch to video source 2
3. Turn on the projector
4. Lower the screen
5. Dim the lights
6. Turn on the Apple TV for watching movies - better than PS3 :)
7. Switch to THX

I might have another macro button called 'Games'
1. Turn on the receiver
2. Switch to video source 1
3. Turn on the projector
4. Lower the screen
5. Dim the lights
6. Turn on the PS3 for playing games - better than PS3 :)
7. Switch to surround sound

In short this is huge for all of us that want everything done automatically and integrate the PS3 seamlessly in that process. It makes it easier for guests and other family members to enjoy the system, after all they are not all like us - Huh? In short accommodate the !2:00's with one click buttons.

espostal

Comments on Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 gets official

You're missing the point a little too. Having the Nyko allows you to use the Nyko receiver in conjunction with your Harmony remote. All you do is use the Nyko remote to program in the IR codes to your harmony. From there, you can use all the macros just like you mentioned.

I went with the IR2BT about a year ago and love it. It does all the same things this Logitech one does. It might not look as pretty, but it's been out for much longer and only cost me $60. However, now that IR2BT has updated and jacked up their price, this is the prime time for Logitech to swoop in and take over their previous price-point. Way to drop the ball IR2BT...

daaper

Comments on Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3 gets official

I use the Nyko / Harmony now. While much better than fumbling with a controller i still have found no way to exit Life with Sony (Folding@Home) & the missing the on/off I seem to find more annoying than most. The short-sighted and penny-pinching move to not include an IR port on the PS3 has created a (well-deserved) furor against Sony. It's obvious that they did this to (1) force you to buy their special remote and (2) save (literally) a few bucks in production costs.
