Denon Japan delays DVD-A1UD universal BD player till October
Hope you weren't planning on scoring one of Denon's mighty pricey DVD-A1UD universal BD players anytime soon, 'cause it just got delayed. Again. After surfacing to much fanfare late last year, the all-in-one player has since been tangled in setbacks. The latest excuse has something to do with "taking time to optimize the playback," but we're not exactly sure why that testing will take until October to complete. Believe it or not, it will have been 10 full months from announcement to ship date if the new launch window stays put -- meanwhile, OPPO's taking full advantage of the situation here in America with its BDP-83.

Playback optimizing my foot! This is all about money. It always is. Denon can't sell the blu-ray disc players they have on the market right now. With the Oppo BDP-83 already in limited circulation and the economy in the tank, the D & M Holdings braintrust clearly realizes a 4000K pricetag for this unit will be doomed right out of the gate. If they priced the DVD-A1UD at $500, they still won't outsell the Oppo, and we all know a price reduction of that magnitude is not going to happen. Sure, there was a time when a consumer could walk into a store and be sold on the Denon name by some teenager, but; Those days are gone because there won't be too many big box stores left to pimp these overpriced, under supported mass productions. Hey Denon! If you want to sell a $4000 universal disc player to audiophiles in this market, it had better have a rather large blue meter with a brushed aluminum plate that reads McIntosh on the front faceplate, come with a ver 1.3 HDMI cable and a video calibration disc amongst its standard features package. Personally, I don't mind spending money on audio-video equipment, but; I'd much rather buy eight Oppo's for each room in the house than one Denon unit with performance that could be considered marginal at best when compared to the competition.

how can you tell that the Denon's performance is only "marginal at best" to the Oppo? Have you tried them both? What a ridiculous claim.
WLB @ Mar 20th 2009 10:30PM
He didn't specifically say it was marginally better than the Oppo; he said to the "competition", which may or may not include the Oppo given the price point.

WLB is correct. Don't get mad at me. Buy the Denon if that's what you want! It's a free country.

What is the source of your information about a delay on the release date to October? According to Denon, it is incorrect. Denon says the release date for the a1udci is still late May/June.

i find it comical how many of the people who whine when a manufacturer pushes back the release date of a new product are the same people who are the first to whine when a new product has glitches which could have been avoided with a little more beta testing
personally i think Denon is making the right move by pushing back the release if they feel their is room for improvment, especially given the price point. They may lose a few customers because of the delay but im sure fewer than a piece that gets bad reviews upon release because the bugs werent worked out.

I hope they'll use the extra time to include a subtitle-moving facility. Then CIH fans will clap their hands.
