Engadget HD Podcast 127 - 03.10.2009
Not so many topics this week, but we still manage to wring an hour of HD-talk out with lots of internet TV. We go around on ZillionTV, and we're not really sure of what's in store or how exactly it will be implemented, but we don't see a good case for it anyways. Clearly, lots of people are "interested" in internet TV, and we didn't need an analyst to tell us that -- the question will be in how much it costs and what exactly is delivered to end users. Oh, and quality of service -- which is something that boxee won't be able to promise for Hulu delivery now that the two parties appear to be going tit-for-tat. Internet delivery and piracy follow each other closely, but at least pirate bootleggers may be stifled by audio watermarks that can tie a theater seat to a disc purchased from a street stall outfit. We wrap up with some physical media discussion; Disney is giving you more with its Pinocchio Blu-ray by filling in those pesky black side bars with graphics while Fox is taking extra features out of its rental DVDs.Get the podcast

I removed some noise and added some compression. See my comment from the previous podcast.

Hey Guys,
Love the show!
I Have another question for you to add to the survey.
If you live in a country were your TV providers don't give you the content you want, then is it ok to torrent it?
On another note: why doesn't anyone release a box that does it all? like i have an Onkyo A/V receiver, it streams Audio but not video, My PS3 streams most video but not everything. why doesn't someone step-up and take care of all this?

Obviously, I can't talk about how great the Popcorn Hour is, without coming across as a massive fanboy, but I'll have a go!
I have an A100 and an A110 at home. The A100 is in our bedroom, attached to an LCD and the A110 is hooked up to my 50-inch Kuro. My fiancée mostly uses the A100, and I asked her the other day how awesome it was, and she agreed it has changed our lives.
Now, she can watch movies, TV shows or whatever, in the bedroom, leaving me to enjoy quality time with my beautiful Kuro. Also, this means that my Kuro NEVER has to show Sex and the City, which is a good thing.
In terms of configuration, it hardly takes any effort to show myihome (the Popcorn server) where your media is. My Popcorn Hours get their network access over powerline adaptors, which handle 720p fine. For 1080p material, I use a portable hard drive, or I FTP the stuff to the hard drive in my A110. Switching to Ethernet would enable 1080p with no problems.
So, what is my point? I guess, that these devices are really simple to use, my fiancée isn't a techie at all, but she's more than happy to use them, and has no complaints about their simplicity. Apple TV is useless to me, because I don't use iTunes - oh, and because the quality sucks.

I have charter's AD box which really pisses me off. I call it the AD box because my guide screen has rotating ads at the bottom of it. and! and! when i press the down button it highlights the ad box before going to the next page of channels. Every once and while I will mistakenly hit it and the fun begins. ITS WRONG to make me pay for ads. WRONG WRONG WRONG. I watch ads because I am being entertained by the media the bring me. I pay for cable because I am getting the content. Why am I paying for an ad on the bottom of my guide screen? Stupid AD box. I told them this is one reason among many why a chapter 10 was just filed for their company.
Venting is over.
Love the podcast, hate charter.
