Your HDTV, or your setting in the PS3 are at fault here. I am doing the same thing and the difference between normal DVDs and Blu-Rays are mind blowingly obvious. I really don't know what else to say, the resolution bump is pretty huge.

there's probably nothing wrong with his settings. It is most likely he is watching Blu-ray movies with poor transfers. Many of them don't look much better then DVD.

My settings. are fine. I said I can see little difference, not no difference. They are hooked up HDMI and set at 1080i (DirecTv is set at Native). And yes I have set it at 720p and for some reason the quality is better set at 1080i even though the TV is 720p. The differences are perhaps a little extra lines in a persons face here and there, and when bricks are on the screen you can definitely see a little extra texture in those. But it does not make the picture "better". Of course everyone sees something different and has there own tastes. For my tastes I can live with a few less lines in a persons face and I know they are bricks. But with the Netflix (I have only tried off a laptop hooked to my tv via VGA and have not seen their HD content) I see so many compression artifacts that the quality is just unacceptable to me (I have DSL and it is showing High Quality so it is not an issue there). I actually thought it was a little better before they switched to silverlight though. The last movie I tried watching on there was "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and the quality was far below VHS and more something I would expect from YouTube.]]>Feb 20th 2009 10:07AMhttp://enghddev.weblogsinc.com/2009/02/20/netflix-ceo-alludes-to-streaming-only-pricing-by-next-year/http://enghddev.weblogsinc.com/2009/02/20/netflix-ceo-alludes-to-streaming-only-pricing-by-next-year/PC netflix streaming and TV "STB" style streaming (xbox360, Roku, TivoHD, etc) are VERY different. They often use completely different encodings and bitrates. So, your laptop comparison isn't a real test.
I think there is also on-box processing that helps too; at least on my S3 HD Tivo, even many YouTube streams can look pretty darn good, even on my 55" RP CRT HDTV, strangely much better than on my PC.

The netflix SD ones are close to DVD (maybe bit softer), the HD streams are close to HD broadcast; I have no bluray player to compare with.
It's not perfect, and not the same as what bluray would be, obviously- especially items lacking like surround, subtitles, and fast rewind/ffwd response w/o buffering-
but, the quality is "good enough", and the convenience factor is surprisingly important and beneficial. I can just pick from a list of 50 movies I feel like watching at any given time, from my Instant queue, instead of having to settle for the 1-3 DVDs I happen to have out at the time.

Another really nice feature is many HD streams of current TV shows- current and past seasons-
so that if somehow I missed an episode, or for example the recording ended at the wrong time, I can just pull up the ep on Netflix, in HD, a few days later. I could do something similar on Hulu, but- this is on my HDTV :)
