Philips' 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV: not for Americans
Oh, bollocks! If one particular spokesman who opened up to ZDnet today is accurate, Philips' totally sweet 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV won't ever be sold on American soil. Quite frankly, we're wondering what's up with Philips and its apparent disdain for the US market. It farmed out its Blu-ray / DVD and TV operations in North America to Funai, it didn't even bother showing up in Vegas for CES, and anything even remotely swank that it produces seems to be reserved for those overseas. What happened to the worldwide love, Philips? Did someone give you the impression that Yanks wouldn't buy one of these completely mesmerizing new panels? Sigh.

If this was larger, I would be all over it. I'm thinking about doing a projector setup simply to get full use from super wide screen format blu-ray disks
Kaveman @ Jan 31st 2009 9:39AM
ace: go with the projector, you won't regret it. Just make sure you can control the light in the room.

Perhaps they're seeing the economic slow-down as particularly bad in the US compared to the rest of the world?
Karyudo @ Jan 31st 2009 7:54PM
Maybe Philips is put off by the large number of Joes Sixpack that already complain about movies and TV not filling their screens. I guess on the upside, ignoramuses who accidentally bought one of these babies might start insisting the movie industry change their default format to match 21:9 instead of 16:9 -- which of course they already use.
ZeitgeistXIII @ Jan 31st 2009 12:19PM
Bummer ! We are getting punished for our economics. lol

There's nothing funny about this!

They probably said why ship em overseas since europeans pay double the price as we normally do :p
Jonsson @ Jan 31st 2009 4:06PM
Yes, that's a real bummer. Maybe that's why BD is doing so well in Europe. We're not so price sensitive since DVD's are already way overpriced and BD's are expensive but not "that" expensive in comparison.

What's with all the we vs them at Engadget? I'm not "overseas", I'm right here. I just don't happen to be in the US. Do we need to add a warning before entering the website: all articles published from a purely US perspective, "foreigners" enter at own risk? Doesn't Engadget cater to a world-wide audience? It seems very unnecessary to me to constantly look at everything from a purely US viewpoint. Nothing wrong with the US - love the place - but it's silly bordering on weird to pretend that all Engadget readers are Americans living in America.
madgamer @ Jan 31st 2009 3:13PM
I'd say it has more to do with where the bloggers live. If everyone (or nearly everyone) writing for Engadget is from the US and they know many of the readers (but certainly not all) are as well, then you tend to slant things towards a specific audience.

Seriously, how big do you think the market for this TV really is? I mean, watching 4:3 content on this TV wouldn't be a great experience at all. There are no TV shows (as opposed to movies shown on TV) filmed in anything wider than 16:9. So this is (obviously) a TV optimized for movies, but many movies are filmed in 16:9. While I definitely agree that many movies would look awesome on this screen, I agree with someone else who posted earlier - if you're that into movies, you already own a projector (or are about to upgrade to one). A 2009 HD projector in a dark room with a 2.35:1 screen will beat this TV to a pulp displaying BDs. So who's the target audience?
Scarabaeus @ Feb 2nd 2009 1:12PM
I think it's a decent size for a normal living room. With it's 56" diagonal at 64:27(erm, "21:9"), it shows a 44" picture at 16:9 and 36" picture at 4:3, when set to pillarbox (as it should be).
Anything larger, and you get into home theater room territory, where most people would install an constant height projector system.

Fuck this pile of crap.
My friend drove to San Francisco and bought the 65" Mitsubishi Laser Vue which BLOWS this thing away. Watching Ray on this? Completing AMAZING. Hooking up your computer (If you've got the video card juice), Wii and Xbox, just insane!

And YES, I will be watching the Superbowl on it today!
Save your money, Laser TV's are the wave of the future.

I wouldn't buy it. I would if it was from any other vendor. To date, not one electronic piece from Philips has worked for me, and I've returned each and every one of them.
21:9? Love it.
Philips? Hate it.
