Time Warner Cable adds QVC HD, five others in Albany, NY
As proud members of the internet generation, we here at Engadget HD will never quite understand the desire to waste bandwidth on a channel like QVC HD, but we suppose the seniors are more apt to buy things they can actually see, right? Rambling aside, the point here is to inform you that six new high-def channels have dropped in Albany, just a month (and change) after Time Warner Cable announced that the region was now offering over 100 HD and On Demand options. The newcomers include FX HD (1829), Cartoon Network HD (1832), SPEED HD (1877), NY1 HD (1859), Golf HD (1865) and the infamous QVC HD (1822). We know which one you're tuning to first.[Thanks, Bradley]

Albany gets QVC HD and I can't even get ABC HD in the Central NY region? WTF?

Not that I care much, but QVC HD is a cheat and not really in HD. They compress the standard QVC video into a smaller box on the left two-thirds of the screen, with the remaining third occupied by announcements and "coming up next" graphics.

Augh! This is my market, but as much as I love my Tivo HD, almost everything Time Warner adds this days is using SDV, so I don't get to watch them until that new add-on box comes out :( :( No Good Eats in HD for me. Or Discovery :(

the hd channels being offered on time warner cable from albany area isnt actual highdef picture and sound to the home, its being downconverted and upconverted, therefor its anologue and digital conversion thats not real true digital highdef.we all know twc isnt digital and neither is there highdef channels they offer, because everything is delivered thru coaxial copper lines.,so copper doesnt deliver real true digital quality, its the same old crappy anologue.
siva @ Dec 7th 2008 10:22AM
This is the most absurd comment I have ever heard. You are saying copper does not carry digital data !!#^$%^!
I thought you were a legitimate complainer when you said that TWC downconverts and upconverts. There are some systems out there that precisely do that because of inadequate hardware and tranmission systems. However, to say that TWC downconverts and upconverts and also does A/D and D/A just because they use copper!!!! That is absurd. Everyone uses copper! Howelse do you carry. May be optical as in Fios, but it is still converted into copper at your home but it is still in digital format.

"because everything is delivered thru coaxial copper lines.,so copper doesnt deliver real true digital quality"
This is totally false. How do you think OTA digital TV is transmitted from your antenna to your TV? It is through a coax cable..the same kind that the cable, satellite, and telco guys use.
From the HD I get from TW, I really have no complaints. The picture quality is very good..granted, it really depends on the source. Some of the broadcasters do a very good job (CBS, DIscovery, History) others are marginal (local NBC station). I also would like to see USA and Sci-Fi in HD. Since I am in Texas, I probably will not have to wait too long as we seem to get the new HD channels soon after Albany.

Your Welcome, and The 100 HD stuff is not even really true, there just like comcast counting hd ondemand channels, But all of the content on the hd on demand channels is stuff that no one would even watch. I just wish we could get a deal with NBC and Viacom so we could receive SPIKE HD, MTV HD, VH1 HD, Nickelodeon HD, Scifi HD, USA HD. But no they have to waste are compressed bandwidth (yeah they over compress it now) on garbage like QVC hd, Seriously some of our hd channels look horrible especially when it comes to football games because its compressed so much.
Sorry to go off on my rant. haha
